Want to learn about 16v

I have been curious about 16v systems and was wondering what all has to be done to run 16 volts of fury to your amps. Do you use a dedicated alternator with like an 18v regulator solely for the back? Just one alt? How does this work?

I know I know, if you have to ask about 16 volts the answer is no. But I just want to learn more about it; right now I have nothing even remotely worth running on 16v.

unless you compete, not much point

u will need a 18v alt to charge it unless u are running on batters only.

cars don't like 18V u can use a step down module or a 3 post batter.

yup 2 alt is ok too, one 18V for the battery bank...

You either have to have 2 alts on for your system and one for your car, in which case the extra batts for your system also have to be 16V, if you dont have room for 2 alts, you have to have a stepdown transformer(I forgot the term), so that your cars computer/other 12V electronics dont fry. Just a few things, I sure others can add more.

You need at least 18v charge voltage or your batteries will never charge properly.

That means 1 of 3 things:

1. Plug in car. You trailer your dedicated SPL car to the show, burp it, then put it on a charger.

2. Split electrical system. 2 alternators, 2 discrete electrical systems. 1 for the amps, pretty much only the sub amps since it's pretty rare to find regular amps that will run over 15v, the other for the normal electrics, headunit, etc etc.

3. Step-down or multi-pole setup

This is usually the cheapest way to go, you buy batteries like the Kinetik 16v's which have a 12v post on the battery. Then you can run the sub amps and alternator at 16/18v and everything else at normal voltage. The big debate around this is whether the charge imbalance (from draining the battery un-evenly) matters. Some people say it's fine, some people say you shouldn't, yet others say "oh my god look at my melted batteries!!!"

You can also get a step-down module or regulator but often these don't supply a lot of current... especially if you need 12v for starting the engine or running a whole lot of mids/highs amps.

Other thing I'm noticing is that I haven't seen a lot of 18v regs. Haven't been looking too hard but still, haven't seen many at all. I'm presuming most custom alt companies can build a HO with an 18v reg?
