magnumxlwa11 Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Share Posted December 16, 2009 hey man thanks for posting your truck i also have a 2001 ext cab. have you cracked your dash to hell yet. ive got to replace mine. only reason im posting on here is ive asked several people this question and have gotten several replies. ive got a local alt/starter builder here where i live and he told me that the comp for my truck will not take a diff alt that does 14v. whick doesnt make sense. but i was wondering if you have heard that. he said if i replaced the alt check engine light would come on. or i would have to buy some type of voltage regulator. but he had a 270 amp 14v alt for me for $200. but im trying to get this question answered before i go buy it. he told me to run stock alt and then install 2nd alt just for the system. the dash isn't cracked to hell.. i've been bumping it.. and it gets loud.. but its truly not performing at its full potential.. i'm having voltage problems.. so as soon as i get that taken care of i hope to be destroying some stuff lol.. I really haven't heard anything yet about a problem with upgrading stock alt.. i don't really care if it'll cause my check engine light to come on because mine is already on lol.. the 270 amp sounds good for 200.. but not sure if it'll cause you problems.. maybe post a question under electrical?? and of course you cant go wrong with adding a 2nd alt.. eventually i will do that as well.. now i have a question for you.. have you done the Big 3 upgrade on your electrical?? if so.. can you post me a pic of the positive coming off your stock alt.. because for some reason, I can only find the ground on the stock alt.. so i haven't been able to fully finish the big 3.. thanks again.. and let me know please.. We tried to followe the wire and it seemed like it was going to the - of the battery, was also toward the end of the day and getting colder and colder lol. The trim panels didn't have to be removed.. had to trim the headliner and stuff.. thats about it.. thanks for the picture on the alt.. for some reason my buddy and i were looking at it.. and we tried to trace it.. looked like it went to the engine ground.. guess not lol.. thanks.. also.. you don't wanna sell your 200amp alt do ya??
