Need help with picking out computer parts

Recommended Posts

Thanks, man...Im really liking that setup. I appreciate the time you took putting it together...what cases would you recommend? My friend swears by his thermaltakes, but I've never used anything other than standard HP, or Dell computers.

BRB with some nice and CHEAP cases.....

I got this case. It's pretty nice. Does what it needs to. No problems, except maybe not enough external 3.5" bays.

Im on this like stink on shit.......BRB

EDIT****

i5 750 199$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115215

Asus skt 1156 motherboard 119$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131604

4GB G.Skill ram 93$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231277

650w Corsair PSU 79$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139005

ATi 5750 GPU (KILLER CARD!!!) 129$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102859

Just use your old case, or get a new one, but this is the MEAT AND POTATOES for a KILLER PC, that you will be HAPPY WITH. Total comes to 633$ for everything above....

Good suggestions.

I would just buy a cheaper processor...cut about 100+ off the price...maybe something dual core.

SUCCESS is a decision, NOT a dream. You have to name the price you are willing to pay to get it.

Here's the setup I have. I'm real happy with it. Not too expensive either. Only thing I would change might be the graphics card. I'd probably get that ATi card newls posted.

Mobo- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131366

CPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103652

PSU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817371015

Ram- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227297

HD- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136283

DVD burner- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827151192

Bluray reader- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827106325

And this is the GPU I have. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150357

But that is a Nvidia gpu and the motherboard is an ATi based mobo. There are some slight problems with that, like a few of the mobo's graphics control programs for ATi don't work with the Nvidia. But that's minor, and don't affect the function of the graphics card or mobo...

All that is like $800 with shipping though. You could probably do without the bluray (-80) and you probably could find some cheaper ram (-20-40ish) That's about how much it all cost me when I bought it over the summer too. Prices really haven;t changed much...

I've built 3 computers for myself and I really like the AMD cpu's. As for cases, this is the one I have.

It's a basic case but does the job.

lets keep in mind here people, that if the OP is going to be doing "MAINLY" photo editing, then he NEEDS a cpu that has a large bank of cache. Yes, like I said in my above post, a Athlon x4 620 would save a 100$, but only has 512k cache per core. That i5 CPU has 8MB's........ ANY, and I repeat ANYYYYYYY adobe program will love that bank of cache! of course the OP can use the lesser CPU's, but we are talking about a significant performance difference, and if it costs only 75-100$ now to have it, the OP might as well get it.

Thanks, man. You've really been a huge help. Main purpose will be video and photoediting, so if I will see a noticeable increase in performance then it will be worth the extra $100 or so dollars. Im trying to keep a fairly low budget, but I have no problem spending more money than I planned if I will see a decent benefit...it will just take a little longer to buy if thats the case. Im not wanting to cut off my nose to spite my face.

My System:

Pioneer AVH-P3200BT

4-Dayton 7 inch reference series (front doors)

8-Onkyo 3/4 inch tweeters (dash)

1-Sundown Audio 100.4D (mids/highs)

2-18" BTL's (for now)

Crescendo 3kwp (for sale)

Complete rebuild coming soon...

hell, you might want to consider even the "LESSER" CORE i5 cpu's. They have 4mb cache, but something like 50$ cheaper. But stay with intel. Now that these CORE "i" series CPU's have integrated mem controllers, they FLY! AMD has been using this tech since 04, and still do, but intel really is the faster CPU for what your wanting to do.... at least IMO..

Just thought i'd post and mention that i tottally agree with newls1 rig. Great setup that will run like a dream.

Although maybe it'd be better to have a less powerful GPU and a bit more Ram?

Something in the 4xxx series instead of the 5xxx series as the rig wouldn't be used for gaming so not as much of a need for a powerful card.

Then either get 2GB or 4GB more Ram.

Besides that the rig posted by newls1 is spot on.

^^^ He is 100% right, I have been building computers since I was 12 and you never want to skimp on the processor or memory it might suffice for a few months but will soon be back to the laggy slow computer within a year due to software updates, etc that demand more rendering (for editing that is). Hope this helps @_@
