tomypg Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Hey guys, just did the big 3 on my 1988 Honda City, and I noticed it has an external regulator up next to the battery. I recently got my voltmeter installed in the car and have noticed that when the lights are on I get a substantial increase in the voltage. From 12.9 to 13.4/6 I was wondering If I could trip the regulator into thinking the lights are on all the time for the extra voltage or if I can boost it up to about 14.4-14.6. How does a regulator work? It has alot of copper windings in it and an audible relayfor when the car is turned on or off. Neo_frog Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Are you sure you're looking at the voltage regulator? Those usually tie into the computer. Sounds like the starter relay to me. Neo_frog Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Oh I thought it said 98 my bad. I wouldn't suggest trying to modify an old regulator. Basically it measures the input voltage constantly, then closes a circuit to the field wire of the alternator which will charge with a proportionate voltage. Inside there is a reference voltage which is uses for it's comparison. I don't know if yours is old enough to still use the mechanical portion or just diodes. ALSO, because I did the big 3 from alternator straight to the battery by passing the regulator, will it damage anything? in that case why dont you just try to add the other to the car?if you can weld i'm sure you can fab up one.
