pheint_1 Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 im interested in how people make those boxes where they have the two subs on each side and a big port in the middle that uses the bottom and top plate as port walls and im guessing it would be the same except youll be using three walls instead of two, when you have two subs in the middle and two smaller ports and each of their sides right? oh and how do those ports work like the one steve meade uses on his box? is it like a square port? is there a formula to calculate tuning on an enclosure? is some one knows it can they please explain it to me, if its not too much to ask and also can some one teach me how to do those kind of enclosures on top prob. with like a visual aid, i kinda know how to do slot ports are they the same as those enclosures with a bit of moderation or is it totally different? sorry for all the questions but i would like to learn how to create enclosures, and thx to all the users who helped me with my previous questions.

Maroon97SL Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 I downloaded a program a user put up here http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/38791-torres-box-tuning-calculator-updated-310/ i also just looked around on the web and found programs that tell you what size / tune your port should be for your sub ratings. Sorry i can't help more man im trying to learn myself, ill be building my first box here pretty soon. 2000 White Saturn SL2 Kenwood KDC-248U Head Unit 1 Rockrod Fosgate HX2 punch DVC 12 1 Rockford Fosgate R500-1 amp Stock Mids & Highs. Budget Build, I spent about 330$ for the setup. but its a crx, if you cant fart and do a 150 in a crx there is something wrong...
pheint_1 Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 good luck with the box bro, yea ive used winisd, torre's calculator but i dont understand how to place the port length some say measure down the middle of the port and im confused idk what it means?

All ported enclosures work nearly the same way and use the same equation to determine Fb (box frequency). The equation is based on a single reflex design and is used as a reference for more complicated builds since the acoustics change with every new angle and orientation of port/subs/baffles/etc... A couple things you should note are how the tuning is affected when changes are made. Low tuning --> Higher tuning Small port area --> Large port area -The recommended reference most people will give you is 12-16in2 per 1ft3. This can be modified to control response, power handling, and your impedance plot. It does not have to be followed, but the trend will always stay the same. The symbol in the equation is Av or area of vent. Long port length --> Short port length -the longer the port, the deeper the tuning. Attempting low tuners in small boxes can get tricky with paper and pencil and you would generally have to modify port area or box volume to compensate. Higher tuning will yield bigger numbers in most cases, but will unload easier at lower frequencies. The symbol in the equation is Lv or length of vent. Large box size --> Small box size -You can see the trend. smaller boxes will resonate higher due to less air being activated, but it will also be less efficient. Small boxes are fine if you can give more power to overcome the lack of compliance. Subs distant from port --> Subs close to port -The subs being close to the port will have less support from the volume of air inside the box. This trend is debatable in some cases and can change based on the type of enclosure being used. (don't sweat over this one) As you can see, all of these things play a role and have to be adjusted constantly when making designs. Once you start working with clamshells or other tricky designs, you will have to modify the port to compensate for loading. Subs facing each other (depending on volumes), or a port close to a panel will load more and drop the tuning since you are creating a virtual extension of your port. Another thing is having subs facing different directions or with different acoustics acting on each driver, the impedance of the coils can change pretty drastically (and not proportionally) after a lot of abuse. Symmetry is ideal, but it's not important since they will adapt (while depreciating) in their environment. Slot ports take up less space than an equal port volume "square port" as you put it, so it will yield a slightly higher, but mostly unnoticeable tuning. One thing to take into account is ports that are too thin, but meet the 12-16 reference above, will potentially have port noise. Thinner ports have more build up of turbulence and can hiss or roar. In most cases it's not a big deal, but it affects the linearity of the response and can ultimately affect your score. The equation is attached. Need an install? pheint_1 Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 damn nice write up bro thx alot, ive never really tried doing it on paper im not good with math and equations n all that lol i just use torre's calculator people says its pretty accurate, can you tell me how one would measure port length through the middle of the port or what, that part really confuses me? imfrom210texas Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Did you try the RE calc? If Morgan Freeman narrated a story on how great AIDS is, I would be captivated and tempted to contract it myself. His voice just fills my soul with warm fuzzies and puppy tears. He has NO idea and may have a touch of autism to be honest. Is this guy real or is he joking? i actually mistook him for a lesbian in that demo video Wanted to mess around with a box for the garage. Was thinking 4 6x9 in 4 cube at like 30 hz... These are the things that make me lol

Thanks man. As far as your port length, just measure from the entrance to the exit anywhere on it. As long as there are no flares, or changes in cross-sectional area (i.e. tapers) then you'll be fine. Flares just need a small correction factor which you can look up. Did you try the RE calc? pheint_1 Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 sorry bro but i agree with neo_frog re calc is not really accurate and doesnt account sub disp., and so lets say i have a port length of 23" and a depth of 16 and a port width of 3, i would go 14.5in. back (not using front baffle as part of port length), and i would do a u turn and my second port length would be 7.75in. (using .75 of first port length) is this correct or do i have the whole concept wrong?
