I don't think that the switch needs to be grounded, I'd say just make sure all your connections are good using a DMM.

BTW, external speakers are generally frowned upon. He doesn't live near a primary school by any chance?

Well thats why he has the switch to turn it off and on, and yeh iv asked around and people say to \use an adapter to add on another speaker any1 know anything about that?

Alright, here is the end all solution... it involves a relay, but not too difficult. First you will need to buy an SPDT relay, those are the ones with 5 pins on them... Anyway, I'll give you an awesome MS paint diagram of what to do...

That should solve all the problems, but it requires a bit more work.
