dcyphure Posted July 22, 2010 Author Report Posted July 22, 2010 Not sure how accurate my specs are, but should be close. Anyway, the Calc on the left is tuning IF i used 4 two inch ports. The green line on the graph corresponds to this, having 4 ports. The orange line on the vent graph corresponds with just 2 ports.....so either way, it still burps at a high peak. but again i'm not familiar with all of bassbox's specifics, bit too complex for me. *also, note the ft3 of my box...something isnt right cause its total internal volume is actually supposed to be 3.30 ft3. so i think i inputed some measurements wrong...the calc is for inches right, not Millimeter? This is the only calculator that gives me different numbers than anything else i've used...quite a few actually. Also i used the Precision Port calculator for the ports and they say my tuning is 34hz. they adjust for the flares anyway, this is current pic, but something has to be wrong *edit..ok i think the problem originally is i miscalculated my internal volume somehow....god i hate calcs, hate math even worse. i think my box will end up being 4.4 ft3 without sub or ports. everything is almost done so i guess i need to add some blocks of wood or something to make it 3.30 ft3.....can anyone tell me what size block of wood i need? i failed math in school lol
bassl0va Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 i can't seem to use bassbox pro too well, i input the specs and the graph is blank..seems more complex and i dunno what to do with it. I cant go bigger box. 3.25 ft3 is as big as can fit in my trunk and is as big as Kicker recommends for vented box. i already got the 2 inch precision ports (aero ports), i already have most of my box done, i can't waste them but i could add a couple more PP ports...would that work? supposedly, PP ports have less port compression so adding a couple more should be ok right? i'd rather not waste the 2 i already have plus my design wont allow larger ports but i can add 2 more two inch ones on the other side of the box. Did you input the box design? The graph will remain blank unless you have a box and a wooer inputted. Recommended doesn't mean you have to do it, it is just what they suggest. You could do 12cubes if you want but it probably won't work too well, the whole point of these programs is to find the best box for your needs and your sub. You wasted your money on 2" ports, save those for another program and buy some some larger ones like 4" or 6", far more suited to a big box. Incorrect, PP ports have less chuffing (also known as wind noise, port noise etc.) but flaring cannot change port compression, the only way you can fix that is by using larger ports. Think of it kinda like a hose, there is a limit to how much water can flow through it, people use straws for their drinks because you only need to suck up a little bit of drink at a time, and firetrucks have large hoses 'cause you want as much water as you can have if your house is burning down. You could but it still wouldn't be enough. you need 16 to 20 of your 2" ports to fix your problem, so it would be cheaper to use 4 4" ports. Also, if you used 16 2" ports they wouldn't fit in the box. Not sure how accurate my specs are, but should be close. Anyway, the Calc on the left is tuning IF i used 4 two inch ports. No offense but it's the truth. That is the vent velocity not the tuning frequency, you have to look at the first graph in bassbox to get the frequency response. But that is still very bad for the vent velocity, it should be between about 35 and 20 ft/s otherwise it will have port noise and compression. Instead of putting useless wood in the box I say you should change wood thickness to 1.5"s (which can be two layers of 0.75) which will take us some of the spare volume and save the rest for the extra space that 4 4" ports that are like 20"s long will need. dcyphure Posted July 24, 2010 Author Report Posted July 24, 2010 ok thanks. actually i put the wrong box dimensions in and didnt pay attention. my box came out to be 3.6ft3 and 28 hz. but yeah, sounds like screwed up....i think i went wrong by using online box calculators to begin with and some how, at some point i thought i had 3.24 ft3 with sub displacement @34 hz I may have also screwed up winisd, i'll retry it, though i suspect its still screwed.....I already spent the money and time, box got cut. Along with cost i spent for a new amp, HU...etc. I'm broke for my audio budget. so no more wood. but i may try to take some spare pieces and adhesive them inside or something. I'll have to live with it for now, later at some point i'll retry or may go back to sealed and be done with it. guess i could just seal this box eh?
dcyphure Posted July 24, 2010 Author Report Posted July 24, 2010 Hey, i just found the T/S parameters direct from Kicker and realized Winisd's default t/s for kicker is wrong. After entering proper t/s, box volume 3.6 @28hz. it now peaks 6db's at 128hz?? wtf...how can a 28hz tune make it loudest at 128hz? I then changed the port to an 8 inch just to see....and it still has a sharp peak at the exact same 128hz....i played around with several paremeters and box volumes and all of them have sharp peaks regardless of port size, its impossible to get it to show any kind of flatter response. IF i put in 8 ft3 at 28hz and 8" inch port, it peaks at 93hz....serously wtf? shouldnt it peak at closer to the port tuning? Bassbox pro showing similar peaks, but havnt inputed all the details but still i'm starting to think these progs are bs cause i've made ported boxes in the past without calculating and they sounded half way decent...boomy but ya know. i'm just trying to understand how even putting kickers exact box volume and tuning of low hz is making it get so loud at over 2x's the frequency? now i'm really confused. Is it cause of Kickers T/S parameters or what. guess i'll know how it sounds once i get it together, but for future reference, i want to grasp this issue and how much faith to put into these apps. I cant get them to make flatter responses with these sub t/s parameters at least
bassl0va Posted July 24, 2010 Report Posted July 24, 2010 Can you list the T&S parameters? Can't find them anywhere. My RE MT 18" wall build Former build, farewell beloved wall.In progress, Toyota Starlet build This forum has a massive boner for ridiculous electrical upgrades.

dcyphure Posted July 24, 2010 Author Report Posted July 24, 2010 Sub specs direct from Kicker 08s12L74 Averaged Norm Imp: 8.00 SPL: 87.47 Lem: 5.420 Reve 6.77 Sd 0.0645 BL 25.44 Vas 45.46 Mms 247.53 Fs 31.55 Qms 5.744 Qes 0.586 Qts 0.532 Xmax 14.1 Some pics to see what i mean. I changed the graph to display 20hz to 150hz from default 10 to 500hz to see better. My outer box dimensions and T/s paremeters are entered correctly for sure this time. Doesnt matter what size port i use or even if i change size of box, something isnt right I even typed in 8 inch port @ 32hz and 2.5 ft3, still frequency is off the charts....how can output surrpass its tuned frequency? my box as it is And here is my box of 3.6 ft3, 28hz changing prots to using Two 8" ports showing the full default graph 10-500hz...doesnt change if i put in 1 port either. unless there is an explanation, i can safely assume this output is wrong right? I would show Bassbox, but for some reason i cannot get it to plot out the graph..nothing happens.
dcyphure Posted July 24, 2010 Author Report Posted July 24, 2010 Max SPL is the only other graph that shows anything. Maybe this has more meaning but it doesnt change if i make port size 8 inches or 2 inches. apparantly it doesnt consider port size but only box size and tuning, if i put 40hz tuned, its basically the same sharp peaks, just starts at 40hz instead and louder...but far from flat when you drop this box into a car..the graphing and plots will change.. i know, i just wanted to get a basic visual and show that theres no way i can get it any flatter. i'm assuming any ported box has a sharp rise at its tuned and quickly rolls off either way? but thats like a bandpass box? i don't get it...but i'm going with what i have regardless. i'll update with how i think it sounds compared to my sealed box when i'm done.

The blue line was 3.5 cubes, ignore it. pink was a Qes of 0.293 white was a Qes of 0.586 this is because I don't know how kicker measured it, it could be separate coils, parallel or series. No offense, but I'm sure you did something wrong. All graphs worked for me.
