[What is ACTA?]

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (also known as ACTA) raises significant concerns for consumer privacy, civil liberties, innovation, the free flow of information on the Internet, commerce, and developing countries' ability to choose policy options that best suit them.

Doesn't the Constitution say a warrant is needed to search my computer?
It does! But because ACTA is a treaty, it circumvents the Constitution and takes away our rights!

Internet service providers (ISPs) will be forced to monitor what you do online and report to the government anything that is seen as suspicious. How are they going to pay for this? They aren't; instead they will raise our Internet bills.

tl;dr rich d-bags around the world are going to take our right to internet privacy and control our browsing, taking money from us in the process, via an international treaty

********************
[Why should I care?]

Throughout your life, the internets have helped you in many ways. Many a lonely Friday night have you used the internet to type away your problems. When you think about it, you can't imagine what your life would be like without the internet.

Well, too bad. ACTA's about to destroy your human rights. They're going to end piracy, but go against the constitution in the process. This means it's time to say bye bye to your right to privacy.

So, why should you be worried about ACTA?
-It allows them to censor the internet.
-It allows them to search your iPods and computers randomly without giving a reason.
-It allows them to confiscate your iPods and computers without giving a reason
-It allows them to monitor what you do online
-It allows them to block websites deemed "unacceptable", without limit
-It will ban p2p technology, like uTorrent
-It will allow ISPs to PERMANENTLY Ban you from using the internet, without a trial.
-It will allow arrests based on the content you search.
-In a nutshell, they're basically taking your freedom and raping it hard.

Our internets will be controlled and monitored, bent to the will of the rich corporations.

Think about everything the internet has done for you. Are you going to stick up for it? Are you going to stop these greedy bastards from getting their way? Defend the internet, defend your rights, and fight back, don't be a pussy and just sit there saying it'll never get passed. Take action!

********************
[What can I do to help?]

Well, we've got some good news. With enough help from awesome people like you, we have a chance of stopping this treaty from going into play. Currently, our strategy is to bring as much publicity to the ACTA as possible. Keep in mind that ACTA is not a bill. It's a secretive treaty that nobody is supposed to know about in the first place. ACTA's advantage is the fact that the general public is oblivious of it. They know what they're doing is unconstitutional, so they are forced to hide it. Why else would it be so secretive? Why is it that all we know is whatever leaked information we can get our hands on? If it's as innocent as they're trying to make themselves out to be, then they would make everything public. This is why we need to take away one of their primary defenses, and reveal ACTA to the public for what it really is.

Pimpin, This shit is happening, and will happen, and when it does, people like the above person will not be the funny guy anymore and ask and wonder why or how its happened to us...

It makes me worried, wondering why no one seems to care about shit like this... They must think we are conspiracy nutjobs or something...

If they try and take my Ipod, I have about 50 friends that will have something to say about it... Smith, Wesson, Winchester, Ruger, Charles Daly, just to name a few... And no, I dont think this is extreme... :drinks:

Trust me, i dont think YOU are a conspiracy nut job. I'm not trying to be funny, it's just thats the smart way to go about taking something over so you dont have the people trying to revolt. Taking small bites of our freedom away over periods of time is how they do it. It's similar to the strategy Hitler used in Germany against the Jewish population. If they take small steps towards this it will be harder to recognize, thats why i said it's surprising how much their trying to take in one shot.

Im sorry, I assumed you were being an ass, just as 97% of the people that respond to threads like this... But, you are absolutely right about Germany... Same thing is happening here, slowly but surely our rights are being stripped from us...

yea i know where you're coming from, i've bucked heads with alot of cats in this section. But the way i see it, theres so many variables with all the liars and crooked politicians that the odds of anyone having any idea of what is really going on are very slim. And a word of advice man, never pull a weapon when fighting for your rights. once you pull, they pull and you die considered an extremist and you make nothing but ink. If they kill you unarmed for your rights you will become immortal and your soul will pave the way towards the revolution. if you're gonna die atleast die for a better cause. viva la revolution.

So...if someone gets an anonymous tip that you are raping children in your basement, the FBI can come in to investigate at their will. Is that an invasion of privacy?

I'm not being a dick, we all download songs and shit, but to harp on these guys for trying to make a buck by enforcing laws that have been around for a LONG time makes no sense. It's not an invasion of privacy because they are not searching people's computers as they see fit. They will get red flags and investigate accordingly just like any other law enforcement.

Keep it friendly! I'm just discussing a point. :)

I see your point, but without previous charges most investigations would probably be dropped. But if they were to pursue, it would be an invasion of privacy because that is'nt probable cause. Monitoring and red flaging things THEY think are suspicious will cut a very large chunk of our freedom away. One thing i keep thinking of is they will be able to monitor and control OUR browsing. The internet is the fastest way to spread anything, but if you cant see it you'll never know. Just like this post today, if someone monitoring this thread thought it was too rebelious or too anti-government in a time where terrorism is florishing and deleted it, i would've never seen it and i would've never thought my government was doing anything wrong. When they stop you from seeing they stop you from knowing, and knowledge is power. Ignorance is bliss because it causes you to be blind, and not seeing something would be just that. Monitoring and controlling what we see will caus us to be ignorant of what is happening, and sometimes i really think that's what they're shooting for. The governement doesnt need the internet to stop crime, it needs stiffer punishments.

Lets keep this friendly fellas!

I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt though. While they would love control of everything, I think actually making the attempt without valid justification would cause a bigger uproar than they are ready for. I don't think they are being creepers either, but trying a different approach at controlling what's already in place.

But I agree 100% on stiffer punishments (in all aspects). It's been proven in many countries that that approach to crime significantly reduces it.

Well wouldn't ACTA be the valid justification? They want access to our computers to stop piracy. I believe once they're allowed access they will eventually warp the laws to allow unlimited access with out probable cause. I believe ACTA is just a disguised step towards the government having full controll of what goes on in the internet.

It's not that simple.

They can also ban your from using websites they deem inappropriate.

Pornography, Gore, websites that show how to make fireworks and such...

Your ISP will be constantly monitoring your internet usage and if they deem that you are abusing that power by using P2P networks they can Ban you from using the internet permanently, as well as notifying the authorities.

Not that I approve of obtaining music illegally, just that sometimes there's a hard to find song and one may sink to a lower standard to find it.
