OcBish Posted December 28, 2010 Report Posted December 28, 2010 Ok so i recently purchased two lvl 4s with levl 5 soft parts.. (Not from rusty) Coils look great on both subs, subs arnt stiff like brand new but its not stupid loose.. I am only running one 15 right now in a 3cuft box wired at 2ohm on a crescendo 3k.. I used this box for a lvl 5-12 on the 3k and it played fine.. I sold the lvl 5s and got the lvl 4s .. The face of the box is 3layers of 3/4in mdf thick, about 3cuft after all displacement... Box is tuned to around 32hrtz.. The gain on the amp is maybe 1/4 of the way up at most.. When i play a song no mater what freq the sub doesnt move but maybe a 1/2in at most if that.. The sub will start to stink, and you can smell the vc getting hot.. The front of the sub isnt warm or anything, but you smell the coils after playing for maybe 45secs tops.. sub may be getting about 700-800 watts at most.. Again all i did was cut a bigger hole for the 15, and then turned the amp up very lil .. Ive checked all my wires, i tried this with both subs, ive done everything i know maybe causing the issue. Just two suggestions I can think of. 200a alt. by Excessive Amperage hc800 under hood & 2 Deka 9a31 in rear 1/0awg + big 3 SAZ 3000D HDC3 18" @ 2 ohm

Just two suggestions I can think of. i checked the sub and its reading 2ohm, the gain is stupid low so i cant see the gain being to high .. Im not buying a oscope, and the box was built for this sub just cut the hole for the 12 at first till i got the 15.. dugee81 Posted December 28, 2010 Report Posted December 28, 2010 Well I take it you have a DMM then. You should at least check the gain using it.. Grab a test tone and see if the amp is putting out the correct amount of AC volts. You said 700-800 watts @ 2 ohm. My calculations say that the amp should put out around 37-38 volts AC 200a alt. by Excessive Amperage hc800 under hood & 2 Deka 9a31 in rear 1/0awg + big 3 SAZ 3000D HDC3 18" @ 2 ohm
Boon Posted December 28, 2010 Report Posted December 28, 2010 Check the resistance of the coils. Or disconnect the sub from the amp, set your DMM to DC volts and put it on the amp's outputs, if you're getting more than ~500mV the amp has DC offset issues. However as soon as the amp came on this would result in the sub going POP either in or out a bit. 10.x volts fo' life!
