Kickpod Build/tutorial

Recommended Posts

K, I'm building a kick pod because a couple shops want to see some of my fiberglass work, so I thought I'd throw something fresh together. While I was at it, I took plenty of pics, and theres enough for it to be a sort of tutorial. So read on!

I removed my kick panel, and covered it in masking tape to prevent resin from touching the stock piece.

I sprayed WD-40 on the tape as a sort of mold release, and layed down a few layers of glass.

Posted Image

Then I ran a line of nylon rope around the outside edge, so that I can cut away all the fabric that will be stretched over the edges, and the fiberglass will still have something to attach to.

I cut out my speaker ring and supported it the way I wanted with wooden dowels and hot glue. I use hot glue so that I can yank it off if I need to readjust the aiming or height.

Ready to stretch:

(just an old t-shirt, but whatever works, I had no fleece at the house at the time)

This thing was a bitch to stretch, I had to make two relief cuts, but they'll be glassed over and reinforced, so it's not a big deal:

Resined and glassed first layer:

Another layer or two added, and then sanded with 40 grit:

Thanks guys, I'm uploadin more. This thing is pretty much done, I just need to spot fill it and keep sanding. Keep in mind, this is just an "exhibition piece." This isn't going in the car, mostly because I'm selling the car. But I'm going to make it look good because it's going to help me get a job this summer.

I keep telling myself to order some Rage Gold, but I always end up needing filler "right away" so I go buy what I can find. Well I'm thoroughly sick of the normal bondo, and the only other stuff I could find at pep boys (had a gift card to spend) was the Bondo Ultimate. So I gave it a shot. And I must say it's muuch better than the traditional stuff. It's similarly priced as Rage too, I'll have to order some Rage as well so I can do a full comparison.

Anyway, on with the pics!

Here's the filler:

Roughed up with 40 grit (i know its low, but its awesome for the first coat) and followed by 90 grit:

Thanks guys!

Here's the last round of pics for tonight.

Got a little high build primer on to see the spots that needed filler:

Sanded down the primer in those areas, added some more filler, resanded, and resprayed:

Phew...fiberglass is a lotta work. This would have been a two hour job if I were going to carpet it. Painting it adds around 3 hours (at least) of sanding/filling/prep work.

Like I said, this is pretty much done, just a bit more fill and then some paint. If I were putting this in the car, I'd drill holes through the stock kick panel, and use three or four rivets to hold it on. Or, if I wanted to avoid cutting holes, I'd get some 3M double stick foam tape to hold it on real tight.
