Is that 88% a rough estimate? I'd say it looks around 91% batter than the black box did. When I see those vids of it in your truck with those subs firing on all 30K watts, well, then it'll be 100% better

What kind of car. I'd put bets on it that you could Google the make, model, and year and find it online somewhere. I have no idea how to measure it though.

Each type of box has it's pros and cons. Generally speaking, a ported box will be louder than a sealed box, but a sealed box will have better sound quality. It's very possible to have a loud, sealed box or a ported box with great sound quality, it just depends on how well you design your box. If you're looking for help designing a box, post some of the specs on how big you want your box, and we can help you come up with a few designs you might like.

Sorry about the confusion. There was a topic up about that guy sending messages to a couple SMD members bragging that his system was louder that Steve's. He also claimed to have hit 170+ dB at half volume and beat Steve in two competitions. However, his system's a joke. I laugh so hard every time I see one of his vids.

I think you're pushing it at 62%. The most I've ever seen is a 54% gain, so you're overestimating at 62%. Check in with THIS GUY to see how to get the most out of your system. He beat you in two competitions, you know. Been in the business 10 years now. He knows his shit... BTW, you should switch your subs to JL Audios. I hear they do over 170 dB at half volume.

I'd be able to make you a model in SketchUp. It kinda depends on how you want the box to look and what the dimensions are, but I'll work on a few designs and throw them up here. They'll all be pretty basic to start, but if you see one you like and want me to change it around a bit, I can definitely do that too.

I'd consider subs back, ports on both sides to the wheel well. I'm not sure if this would be the best, but it seems like it'd move the most air around. The other option would be subs and port back, but I always feel like, because the trunk is enclosed, the subs and port would interfere. But it seems to have worked for other people pretty well with subs and port back. Just throwing out ideas here.

I was wondering this earlier. If (for some ungodly reason) all 10 of his batteries died, how would he jump start the damn thing? Could a normal person's car do the job, or would more than one car be required? I don't know enough about things under the hood to say for sure on this one, but something tells me that one car could do it. Although I think it would be funny to see 3 or 4 cars hooked up to the 'Hoe trying to get the engine to turn.

Straight port, 18.65" base: Here's the model with the port slanted (18.65" port base): And here's another with a longer port base which retains the same port area as the original box model: The point of making the port longer (lengthened to 21.5" on the bottom) was to maintain the original port area of 299 in. I'm not sure, but I believe this will let it retain it's original tuning frequency. If there are any experienced or more knowledgeable box builders out there, can you shed some light on this mystery?

I'm pretty sure that, technically, what you're measuring is the port area, not the port length. Meaning if you angled the back wall, you'd then have to make the port longer to make up for the loss of area. I'll make a few edits to the model to try and describe what I'm thinking...

Damn son! Clean, clean, clean. It blows my mind how clean you manage to get those wires. Anyone else would want to cover up their wires, you make videos showcasing yours! You probably spend more time on your wires than some people do on their whole systems.

I got a model going in SketchUp. I kept the port vertical. I don't know what difference it would make in sound if it were slanted, but I can put it that way if you want. I also kept the sub hole (I'm assuming a 15" from teh pics) flush against the front panel, seeing as I don't know what angle it's going to be placed at. Why do you think he cut the hole in his floor. It wasn't for the batts. That was just his alibi. He just got tired of taking the box out the hard way, so he installed a trapdoor in the bottom of his truck. Now he just hits a button on his Viper remote and his box falls out of the floor of his truck. That's why the windows wouldn't close. He was hitting the wrong button on the remote.Also, Steve, would the windows flexing from your system (over time) degrade the railing and rubber guides? I don't think it'd have that much of an effect, but over time (say...5 years or so) could the rails start to wear down? I doubt it, but that might be why they're not rolling up as fast as you'd like. Although it seems like getting them cleaned and lubed up proper got them to slide nice and smooth. I want to see a video of those things in action!

Is the steering wheel ever gonna be wrapped/dyed/whatever? I thought it was initially, but i guess not now. It's still got the woodgrain, although the woodgrain on the center console was painted over in that glossy black. Is that what's planned for the wheel?

Actually, yes!I know I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to car audio, that's why I'm on here. If he's putting in the SMD subs, why bother reconing the Fi's? Or are you speculating on the SMD's? And I figured there was a reason he spread the subs out, I just didn't know what it was. I've seen a few people who fit a ton of subs in, but they're all side by side. I didn't know this affected the sound much.

Anyway, from what I've gathered, you're NOT building a new box? At least not yet? I love the old one, and I think it's everything you're gonna want or need in a box, so keep it. No sense fixing something that isn't broken, right? It's got the wiring in the back for quick hookups and changes, it's got the removable/expandable port (30hz to 50hz I believe?), and you already know it pounds. I think the new amps are just gonna show you that it's the one thing you'll be glad you kept. Also, are the subs being replaced? I believe I read that you were gonna keep them. Not even gonna re-cone them. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one. The only reason I can see for you building a new box is the space limitations because of the new amps and three extra batteries. If it's not all gonna fit in there on the first go, it'll probably have to be redesigned. If you're thinking about this, have you considered placing the subs closer together? I know that the two on each side are nearly touching, but there's about a foot-wide gap between them laterally that you could close in on. I know the box is never coming above those back seats, but if you bring the subs in closer to the middle, could you then bring in the bottom edges (near the wheel wells) up and in, basically inverting the edges and making room to put batteries or amps on the sides. I know you want the amps in a place where you can get to them easily, so maybe just batteries on the sides. You wouldn't even have to invert the whole edge, just part of it. I'll try to make a crude model in SketchUp to try and show what I'm thinking. I know bringing the edges in would affect the volume of the box and the port would have to be altered, but that could all be figured out later. Don't take any of this as me saying I know what I'm talking about, because I don't have the faintest idea about box designing or anything. I'm just throwing out ideas here. I'm sure you've already got an idea of what you're doing, but even if I'm wrong here, it's a learning experience for me. Comments and criticisms are welcome. Trying to learn as much as I can here, and I figure why not learn it from the masters themselves?

x2 to that. I'll take the damn thing off your hands. Don't even worry about the paint or rims. I'll take it as-is. Hell, I'll drive all the way to Cali to pick it up and drive it back. Although it'd probably cost more in gas to drive the thing back here than all the equipment is worth. Well, probably not, but it'd still be an excessive amount. I don't even want to try and estimate what that thing gets for gas mileage. That's not what it's about though.
