It could be a few things a from a bad bearing, pulley or belt to having to replace the whole compressor. On a different note if it is just a simple as replacing the pulley or something and it still doesn't work it could be a refridgerant leak and since it's an older car before te new EPA laws were set I am going to assume it's r-12 and that it hasn't been upgraded to r-134a and the problem with that is that you have to be EPA certified to purchase r-12 so you wouldn't be able to fix it your self

Hmm thought it could of been a bad cell and your alternator was working harder to keep that battery charged lowering the voltage output but if it's resting at 14.4 then it's not that.
