how would you know its doing 500 watts ? and if it is in deed doing 500 watts and the sub is 400 watts rms i wouldnt do it. That amp will only do 900 watts at 1 ohm. so each sub would only get roughly 300 watts . and yes it will not sound so good after awhile due to heat build up and running it at 1 ohm. find a sub that does 1200watts @ 1 ohm like the one i shoulded you.

you get what you pay for basically. i doubt that amp will do 1200 watts and run good on 1 ohm. just not a very HIGH quality amp i guess to run at 1 ohm. if it were me i would go with this amp http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_23548_Hifonics-Brutus-BRZ1200.1D.html and the subs should handle 400 watts rms. so that would be perfect. but i cant speak for everyones opinion on why it would do rated. guess that amp is not good at low ohms

what do you mean clip at 400 watts rms ? where did you get that from ? here why dont you say what amp you are talking about (brand and model) same with subs ( brand and model) and 3 subs right ?

im confused lets be serious and not sarcasm. The rms output of the amp changes. but in your op you asked about subs. ok so you have a 1200 rms amp @ 1 ohm. 3 400watt rms subs. and those subs put your amp at around 1 ohm (1.34ohms to be exact) so 1200 \ 3 subs = each will get 400 EACH. perfect match. ALSO 1200watts \ 400watts rms = 3 subs. so you have the right setup if that amp does 1200 watts clean. what i meant by rms changing is say that amp does 1200watts rms at 1 ohm. if you had a different sub configuration that put the amp at 2 or even 4 ohms it would put out less power! the high the ohm load the lower the wattage output of the amp. the lower the ohm load the more heat. understand ?

am i wrong ? and mad_mike my subs are a bit different they are rated at 600 watts rms each but there each getting 1100 watts . basically this way. AQ 2200D 2200 watts @ 1 ohm. divde the AMP output by number of subs. in my case 2. so 2200watts / 2 subs equals 1100watts to each sub. you divde the amp output, because in a perfect world each sub would get the same power. with those single voice coil subs i wouldn't over power them . my subs are different. get it ?

I suggest we make a sticky of all the different types of boxes from sealed to bandpass to normal ported and a brief description of them and the options you can have with each box (ex. ported box aero ports or sloted), their pros and cons if possible.. Oh and a picture for example. everyone loves pictures . I don't know, i think its a good idea maybe im just blowing smoke over here.

look for some type r's and a box on ebay, that was my second system, type r's are good 1st system, sound great and will pound but dont over do them. raise the budget a bit

Wiring 3 4ohm single voice coil subs together will give the amp a 1.34Ohm load. When you wire the subs together that does NOT increase their handling capability, it only changes the load that the amp will take on to squeeze more power out of the amp at lower loads. Remember when wiring to lower loads that increases HEAT(which is the enemy)and also draws more power so more strain on electrical. Gains should only be set with a DD-1 or O'Scope. Clamp meter and ddm are not correct. Find a local car audio shop they should own a o'scope and will tune your system.

^ hair tricks are from the air. Its not so much the sub/subs but more or less the enclosure design the right notes and the cone area. 8 10's should do a hair trick with the right enclosure but there is really no way to tell unless it is tested.

Well for a quiet ride i would do the floor and the doors. 2-3 layers should be good. For bass it depends on where your box is. If its in the cargo area then you would want to do the back hatch considering that will probaly rattle. I would start with doors, floor, truck. If you observe roof flex then do the roof as well. What does your system consist of?
