  1. Could be worse.... you could be a Giants fan like me.... we will so be in last place this year... loosing to the freakin 'skins....
  2. I love the variety you can get with salt water vs fresh water, but I just can't afford it right now. I've alot of vet bills lately and also trying to save up for a house to get uot of this black hole of an apartment... little at a time as they say. I too would love to see pictures of the 150 gallon salt water tnak though. I bet it is awesome!
  3. I can't use my tap. It makes my fish sickly and always up at the top for air. I even tried with a filter on the faucet and the tap conditioner stuff. Still the same result. Thanks for the tip on the filter. I'll keep an eye on it. For now it is will be ok, but we'll see how long before the water starts to look murky.
  4. Here is a side project that I have been working on at home... I got a deal at Petco that I just couldn't pass up. I got a 29 gallon tank, lid, filter, and heater all for around 100$. All I needed to buy was the gravel, decorations, and the water pump for cleaning it. I also needed to do some construction work since I wanted to put it inside of my old entertainment center, but the shelf only holds 60lbs. Here you can see the braces I added: (I will be staining the wood to match the unit) And here is the water for it. You should've seen the looks I got at the cash register with all of this stuff The fish tank fits perfectly! Now it's time to add the water: And here it is with the filter running and the hood light on: I will be going out to buy some fish for it later on this weekend. I already have two bottom feeders from an older tank and I am going to get at least 1 sucker fish. Beyond that, it's all up in the air
  5. I'm guessing the ozone generator was some kind of high speed oscillator for a flyback or it could be another type of HV generator. Either way, it was just a BFA (big fat arc), right?
  6. OK, I have since tuned in the circuit and decreased the windings in the primary coil of the flyback transformer and thus increased the voltage output of the secondary. The arc is nice and quiet and gets pretty large. However, my coil doesn't seem to be capable of handling the extra voltage as it has shorted internally and cannot barely create a decent arc anymore. Next step: build one from scratch. This ought to be fun
  7. OK, got the box together, and tested it out at work today. No sound source was connected and the circuit wasn't tuned yet, hence the buzzing. Once I get the pot adjusted correctly, that noise should go away, and then I can test it with the proper amount of power and windings. This will make the ark bigger, and consequently more dangerous (probably won't be holding the wire with my hand then ) Plasma Speaker Test 1
  8. And yes, I know it's messy, but it is only a prototype after all
  9. OK, so I have gotten the circuit mostly wired up now. I just need to slap it in the box that I have for it and connect up the flyback transformer, power, and music source and we will be ready for some testing. I should have some results tonight or tomorrow so stay tuned!
  10. ah crap, wish I would have seen this about 2 months ago before I already changed my ignition system to a push button start and am installing an RFID system for the accessories....
  11. devedo is my sn. Bring it on, even though I'm not the greatest either. Sr20daze and flinkster07, you're on my list now.
  12. Sorry for the long wait on this guys. I am expecting the last shipment of parts tonight and will begin construction of this thing ASAP. I can't wait!
  13. Yes, the sound just comes from the arc itself affecting the air around it. So far I have yet to find a design that will get a decent amount of volume to it though, so I'm not sure how it will do for tower speakers. I'll let you know how mine comes out.
  14. That's pretty nice. Probably much nicer than what mine will look like for the first time, lol. We'll see though
  15. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't die if you just stuck your finger in it, but you wouldn't have a finger left, that's for sure. Now if you touched one contact with one hand and the other with your other hand, then it would go through your chest and you'd be cooked for sure... As far as progress, I have stuff on order from Digikey. Once I'm done collecting all of the piece parts I am going to start throwing it all together. I'll be sure to keep you all posted.
  16. Hey guys, has anyone ever built one of before? I came across it from the hackaday website and couldn't help myself; I just have to build one. After all, being an electrical engineer and an audio fanatic, it's right up my alley. I have already begun collecting the piece parts for it and should start having some pictures of progress in the next couple of days. I found most of the parts at Fry's Electronics while I was in California for work travel, but I have to order some of the more complex stuff. I also went to a junk store to buy an old CRT monitor and ripped out the Flyback Transformer (nothing better than pulling something apart and seeing how it works). For those of you who don't know what a plasma speaker is, I will try my best to explain it. In short, it's a high range speaker (tweeter) that is made with electricity arcing through the air, like a little lightening bolt but constant. The sound comes from the modulation of that electrical arc. As the music is input into the speaker circuit, it changes the oscillation of the arc which in turn compresses and expands the air around it causing sound waves. And since the driver has virtually no mass to it, the fidelity is often very high. If built right, plasma speaker can rival the best made tweeters on the market. I must put out a warning though to those who might try to copy this work. BE CAREFUL. This circuit will have HIGH VOLTAGE and can seriously cause harm if handled improperly. Also, there are some out there who say these speakers are harmful because they ionize the air and create O3 or ozone, which is a poison. They do create this gas, but in very small quantities. This will not be a problem unless maybe you isolate the speaker in a small cabinet with you head inside as well and play it for a long time purposely trying to breathe in the garbage.
  17. This is what made me laugh today. These comics can be hilarious :-)
  18. Hey guys, I've been a silent member of this forum for a long time now. I joined back in the day in "07 and never really got into this forum because I was such a regular at the RF forum and didn't want to get addicted to another one, lol. Of course, back then RF forum was actually popular and had new posts to read just about every hour and I could add a thing or two here and there, unlike today. I miss the constant new posts and chatter about one of the topics I enjoy: audio. So I guess what I'm saying is. . . hello, my nickname is devedo and I have been into audio for the past 12 years (holy crap, I never knew it was that big of a number until now). I currently have a Jetta with a T40001bd and 2 T2's that will most likely be changed in the near future. I am a bit of a tinkerer and I have done 95% of my installs myself. I am also working on a little audio project on the side (I will start a topic about it soon). I look forward to chatting it up with you guys and maybe giving some advice here and there for what its worth
