I'm trying to get this garbage off my gauge cluster!

Recommended Posts

So my dad bought this car a while back, and the gauge cluster has always bothered me because it looks like this:

When the sunlight hits it a certain way.

My guess is that the guy who owned it before was cleaning his interior with something like Armor All or something, and accidently sprayed some on the gauge cluster without noticing.

Now took the whole cluster out, (thinking the spots were on the inside, and would come off easy).. But that's when I noticed they were on the outside.

I went out and bought some plastic polish "professional formula" stuff. I put some on there and have been rubbing it in with a t-shirt for like 10 minutes.. I'm not seeing a change.

I sanded a small test area on it, and I think it took some of it off, but I cannot buff out the scratches I made.. I'm not really sure how to "buff".. (You can see the area in the picture)

Anyways, any help or advice would be lovely..

I would think some rubbing compound would bring it back no problem.....maybe your polish is too fine?

lol, toothpaste and baking soda make a good compound for plastics

rub in the toothpaste in a small area, then rub in some baking soda, then rub off with a rag it helps a bit

and its cheap too, i just use small amounts to clean my headlight lenses

Well to follow up on this, I couldn't fix the scratches I originally made, (Yea, I guess my compound was to fine) But 409 did the trick. I tried just about every chemical to get it off, and 409 was the only one.

that's not armor all. I get some on my gauge cluster all the time and it comes right off.
