But the general rule of thumb is 12-16, some say 14-16 or live by some number in there. You will be perfectly fine with 12-16.

why is that the general rule?

who came up with that rule?

someone locally followed that rule for an SPL setup, and it failed rather poorly, way too much port area.

if you're running entry level 10inch subs, off 150watts each, why on earth would you need anywhere near that much port area.

use a program that will plot the port air velocity, keep it below 30m/s and you won't be able to hear any port noise from inside the car, of course open the trunk and unload the woofers and you probably will.

but in the OPs case, 4cuft, 33Hz, 600watts total, four 10inch subs, you only need about 30in^ of port area, unlike the 64 - 80in^ that people are telling him he NEEDS! for 600watts? as if!

i tend to simply ignore people who think you need a certain port area for the size of the box.

you need port area based on what woofers are in the box, and how much displacement they have!

you could probably get away with a single 6inch round flared port and not be able to hear any port noise from inside the car, but 3 4inch round ports would be better.

of course, I don't actually expect anyone from this forum to agree

Can you explain how the port area relates to subwoofer displacement. I am fairly nooobish when it comes to ports and I thought I had some stuff figured out but that one stumps me.
