JONBOY345 Posted July 21, 2011 Report Posted July 21, 2011 I currently have a 12" Kicker L5 in a ported box, and 2 12" Kicker CVR's. Currently the L5 is in my car as it can handle the power of my AQ 1200D without risk of damage to the sub better than the CVR's can at 1 ohm. I like the CVR's how they can hit the higher bass as well as the most of the lows. But I like the volume of the L5 but not how it tends to be bottom heavy and sloppy. So I was considering moving to 2 AQ 2.5 12" in a ported box with downward facing subs and rear firing port. Not sure of Box volume and tuning, but I want to hear the full spectrum of the bass as I listen to many types of music. Any input is greatly appreciated.

It's all in the box... Why would you do downward firing? Bassless once again. Can't seem to keep a system for more than a few weeks Saving for a '06 Nissan 350z, look for build around June 2012.

I run 2 12" SDC's off a 1500D and it's a nice daily set up that probably meters around a 43 is my guess, never threw it on the TL. 4.5cubes net, 38Hz tuning, and 16^2 port per cube is the enclosure I have them in. Plays down to 30Hz, not that I listen to much stuff that low, but mid 40's hit the best as my car peaks in the upper 40's. I've also built a box for 2 12" CVR's and it was decent, but the SDC's sound much better and have greater output. Kid with the CVR's was happy with them though...
JONBOY345 Posted August 15, 2011 Author Report Posted August 15, 2011 Sorry it took me a while to get back to you guys, got really busy over the last few weeks. The main reason why I was considering downward facing would be to prevent dame to the cones as I often times have to haul items in the cargo area without expecting it, other wise I just disconnect the amp box and pull the box out. So best I could figure would be to face the subs down to completely seal them from anything that may in riding in the back with them. Maybe forward, into the back seat? Still with the port to the rear? I have lately fallen in love with the amount of sound the L5 can make, but can't stand how terrible the highs are. So another part of my question is will the AQ's produce close to or the same volume levels while being a more balanced across all the bass frequencies. I pretty new to car audio so any thought are appreciated.

Most likely once I get an idea that I like and will give me the results I want ideally myself. But that will depend on the complexity of the build. My father was a carpenter so I've picked up the basics over the years from him. If not me, then I'll take the plans to the local audio shop, everyone I've talked to who has a box custom built by them has nothing negative to say about their job. Is there someone/company you would recommend?
