They're mainly used to reduce back pressure that can make the dust cap pop off. There are a ton of high power handling SPL subs that do not use a pole vent. There are a ton of high power handling SPL subs that do not use a pole vent. The DC Team Edition/ SPL subwoofers do not have pole vents IIRC. Quote Bassless once again. Some company owner, I forgot who exactly(Maybe Jacob or Electrodynamic) was talking about it before, how adding the pole vent really does not much of anything for cooling with the woofers they were testing it on. But I do see your point, that if it is the only form of potential cooling with a given woofer, then I can see how it will affect it more greatly than on a sub that already has other forms of cooling. This thing sounds amazing. 130 watts, 12" woofer with a passive 12" woofer tuned to 27 hz. Moving the pictures on the walls and my girl got wet from the bass when i showed her haha.
