dkahns51 Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 Ok, so installed my brothers system in his car about a month ago. Today he tells me that he is having car problems. I guess once he starts the car, and turns on the system.. all the electronics go out and the car wont go more then 30 mph. Then when he turns the car off it wont start back up. So I'm guessing its just a bad battery that is the problem. If there are no electronics on in the car then he can drive it normal. Any ideas on whats wrong so i can fix it? Autruche Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 My friend had a problem just like that, we replaced the crappy battery terminals (top post battery) and cleaned the posts and terminals and it fixed it. It turns out the terminals weren't getting a solid connection (battery read 12.5 V, but the terminals read ~5 V) so everything in the car was mostly running on alternator power directly. Most modern cars will turn off things in descending order of uselessness to conserve power in that situation, but your amp will just keep sucking up power. That could be the issue, just test the battery right at the connection points, then test the wires coming off of it. Voltage should be the same. Need Test Tones/Sine Waves? When i installed the 4 gauge power/ground i noticed that there was alot of corrosion on the terminals and battery itself.. Use a wire brush on the battery posts and clean the connectors with it or replace them, their like 4.99 for the set at any autoparts store.
dkahns51 Posted August 13, 2011 Author Report Posted August 13, 2011 So testing his battery with my DMM it was resting at 13volts when the car was off for a little bit.. then i tested it when the car was on and it was @ 13.3 volts... not so good. But then it started skipping around up, down, down down up down.. it ranged from 2 too 14 volts. It never really settled on 1 spot. Any idea on the problem or what would cause this? Autruche Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 Take a wire brush to the terminals, or there is this fancy terminal cleaning tool you can buy at any auto parts store for like $5. Try cleaning the terminals and posts up good. If that doesn't work, then take your DMM and put it on the battery posts, check the voltage, then put the test leads on the terminals or stick them into the wires that are connected to the terminals. If the voltage isn't the same then you should probably replace the terminals. Need Test Tones/Sine Waves? theTank77 Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 battery itself could also be bad along with the terminals. one or more of the cells could be dry causing unstable power (no maintenance batteries arent always no maintenance). might want to think of upgrading the terminal connectors on the wires themselves too. maybe try some of the gold plated ones you can get from advanced. try just cleaning the terminals first since its the cheapest way to go my build log
