I have heard of square cones but....

Recommended Posts

K so I pulled these 8" woofers out of a set of 25 year old Bose 301 speakers my gpa gave me. The surrounds were trash so i just replaced them with some $7 woofers off of partsexpress.com. Anyway wth is this? It is a square motor, have I stumbled across something awesome or just weird?

Ah i see, to me pyshically they dispersion of the motor force would not be radially equal...just seems weird they would try that. Anyone have any other info on it?

Magnet looks quite shifted or something- either way, many old woofers I've seen have square magnets. Most recently were the dash speakers I pulled out of a '71 Chevelle.

Ya it does look a bit shifted, I guess these are the oldest speakers I have ever looked at lol.

Just shear age, the foam surround just dry-rotted and disintegrated over time. I might see if forevrbumpn could recone them and do something with them.

I've got a set of bose kinda like that sitting next to me. They sound pretty good. I haven't looked at the actual speakers in them tho. I have a speaker in my shop that has a very interesting magnet. I'll see if I can find it tomorrow and post a pic
