Should I soundproof car trunk?

To simply answer the OP's question. Yes you should consider sound deadening your trunk.

Our products would of course be my suggestion, (made in the USA, proven track record of performance, blah blah blah) but if you want options I would also consider and not hesitate using...

Don's, from Sound Deadener Showdown, CLD Tiles. Great butyl adhesive, nice and thick aluminum constraint layer, well priced.

Stringer Roadkill Expert. 76mils thick or so, 4 mil aluminum, sticks like a champ, USA made too boot.

Dynamat Xtreme. The "industry" standard for a reason. A bit thinner than there above two products. 4 mil aluminum. Only complaint is the butyl is a bit soft and gummy.

There are a few others I would consider, but it's a very short list.

what about the ˝silent coat deadner?˝

Very few people here in the US will ever run across it since it's pretty much a UK only product.

With that said, which product? Because they offer several different products and I know at least one of them uses some sort of "mastic" as an adhesive which is a bit concerning since it has an asphalt smell to it.

Overall, I would say it's a good to fair product. Biggest drawback is that it's performance is sapped by the standard 4 mil aluminum like all the rest. Even their super thick "Extra Coat" has it, even though it's nearly 4mm thick.

Edit: spelling...

hell i did my whole trunk and i fire forward sealed off from trunk.

Same Here... Did it with FatMat though... Damn budgets...<_<

I used some more of my damp pro last night :) I love it. The only two deadners I'll consider is stinger roadkill expert(great budget stuff, far superior to dynamat extreme.) And second skin damp pro. The damp pro is slightly lighter, but its honestly a negligible difference and its extremely easy to work with. Damp pro is my go to deadner now. Its initial tach is awesome, and easily molds in to place.

Also the other thing that helped was adding a second set of weather stripping to my trunk. There's other stuff too, spray foam, adjusting hinges, sealing the trunk vents ect

I would say save your money and just go with their regular 2mm thick material. Without increasing the thickness and or stiffness of the constraint layer, the extra butyl isn't all that useful.

mmm...you got me confused now...so why is the thickness that important?

mmm...you got me confused now...so why is the thickness that important?

Time to get technical, so I apologize in advance.

It's not just thickness but also stiffness of the foil (i.e. the constraining layer) that affects the performance of a vibration damping mat or material.

With a vibration damping mat installed on a substrate (a door panel for instance), when the panel vibrates/flexes it causes the vibration mat to deform and shear adjacently with the substrate. The constraining layer (the foil) forces the substrate back into shape. This shearing process is what coverts the kinetic energy (the actual vibration of the panel) into the low level heat. This is also why the bond between the panel, constraint layer, and the viscoelastic layer (butyl) is crucial, but that's for another time.

In turn, the thicker the foil is the better it can it can apply force to kill vibrations and the stiffer the foil is, the more shearing force is applied to the substrate to keep it from deforming/flexing.

Just because a product has massive amounts of butyl, doesn't necessarily make it a better performing product.

Personally I would rather have a product that is 2mm thick and has a 8 mil thick foil, than one that is 6mm thick and has a 4 mil foil.

Foam is great for isolating trim and preventing and stopping rattles, but to act as an absorber you would need several inches worth of form to do any good. And I'm not talking 1-2 inches, it's more like 6 + inches and that's just not going to happen in a car.

Thats why it's more effective to use a thinner but much denser material like mass loaded vinyl to BLOCK the sound instead of absorb it.
