Rev. Wrath
Relyks. If you took pics of your friends cars that you worked on, you have a portfolio. Sort the pics out by install and write down what you installed and anything else you can remember that you did to the car. Put it all in a nice binder and BOOM!!! Portfolio. varietyguy
Okay I was exactly like you when I was younger. Shops are more about remote starters and alarms that's where they make the money. If you don't know how to do them most shops don't want to waste the time to train you. As for the MECP certification.....It is pretty worthless to most shops. You can order the book for $35 dollars and take the test and your certified. Most shops know that it is really simple to get. On the other hand Best buy requires an MECP certification. I would definetly start there. Even if they don't have an installer position available you are a definite candidate for the sales floor and shops do like that. My advice. Start a portfolio and focus on how "clean" your install is, and any setups that go beyond a basic sub and amp (how you do connections, how you tape or clean up the wires.) Get MECP certified. You may not even have to order the book. Last I remembered they had a sample test you can take. start at best buy or try detailing at a shop and get promoted. Freshman6969
i went to school up in north jersey, thats what gave me my one up, most shops like they said really dont car about the BASIC MECP cert. if you have the advance MECP cert, your more likly to get the job, basic is just book work, and half its not even on the test, i used my car as my portfolio, just be honest with what you can do if you get an interview, i told my now boss (i just got the job yesterday) im not comfortable doing remote starts and alarms right now, because time is money, itll take me say 6 hours to do a remote start + alarm when itll take an exp. installer 3 hours, dont lie to them, and be like oh i can do alarms like cake, when you really cant, cuz thell put you on the spot and say okay, i have one lined up right now, then your fucked, im mainly doing custom work, h/u, subs, amps, and speakers, because thats what i excell at, MECP is good to have but itll only get you so far, unless you have masters, renew is every two years i think, also my boss said to me my wiring wasent the cleanest, i told him why(cuz i had a show to get ready for) which was infact true, so they also want it to be clean, not some pile of wires where it works, but looks like shit Edited December 25, 2011 by Freshman6969 Quote Legal TL scores145.6 on the dash sealed up in the low 40hz area with the port out145.5 on the dash sealed up @30hz with the port inless then 1k clamped on a 3.5k! Freshman6969
ok thanks ima try the best buy thing anyone else wanna chip in from what ive heard they put you on the floor for a month or two before they get you into the bay...also... theres 4 certs, Basic, Advanced, Masters, Product specialist 60,8O,8O(?),65 to take the tests respectivly... you cant take the adavanced for a year after you pass your basic UNLESS you have either a 90% avarage score on the basic, or 90% on all sections, its one or the other idr which, masters you have to have 2-5 years exp. i think in a shop, you need to pass the basic to take the product specialist I THINK im not 100% sure Quote Legal TL scores145.6 on the dash sealed up in the low 40hz area with the port out145.5 on the dash sealed up @30hz with the port inless then 1k clamped on a 3.5k!
