Just wanting to gather my knowledge as I am lookin at a similar situation. Well first thing is the XP3000 is only $319.99 plus shipping v/s $369.99 plus shipping (2012 MAP price for D3100 is $369.99). The XP3000 has the reserve capacity, but doesn't have the instantaneous power of the D3100. If you are not competing, then the instantaneous isn't as important.
