I plan on getting a DC-power Alt at some point, but right now, it's a bit too much money. That said I have to use what I have, and what I have is a 120amp Alt. I'm currently using 2 caps in series. I'm wondering if my alt would charge 2 yellow top Optimas, I'm currently use just one of these below:

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Optima-Battery-Battery/_/N-acy27Z1z13pyx?itemIdentifier=310361_0_0_

Thanks. It's a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (All bells and whistles of that time, meaning uses more electrical than non-Laredo jeeps). I'm using a 1997 Alt because 1994's don't come in anything higher than 80amps from local stores.

HAS BEEN ANSWERED:

Current Questions:

1.) how do I wire the 2nd battery? pos->pos and neg->neg? Or alt->pos and both negs->frame?

2.)Is the XS xp950 the same as This Optima? I currently have one of these Optima Batteries, if the xp950 is similar came I put them together?

an alt will charge whatever you put on it. whether it likes it or not is a whole other deal. You can charge multiple batts on a stock alt, it just puts more strain that manufacturers intended use. Places like DC, Mech, Singer, etc. build theirs KNOWING someone is putting thousands of watts and possibly 10+ batteries to a alt or 2.

what amplifiers are you powering, that would help.

in reality, with the 2 optimas and the 120amp, you could probably sustain good voltage without the dc alt. it would be a nice upgrade in the future but in reality you will be running about 2k-2200rms.

Well that is wonderful news! Also I will be upgrading to a Hifonics BRZ(?) 2200, or 3000. Would I need the DC-Alt before that upgrade?

if you eventually go hifonics, go the brz. for that much wattage a dc alt would be needed, and possibly 1 more battery. i say possibly because it might not. when you get an aftermarket alt they charge at higher voltages, meaning amps need less amperage to create the same wattage.

Will do, Last question (I think). Do I need to add any extra protection to my amps, speakers, headunit, etc. with an additional battery, and/or the DC alt? obviously I need to add fuses for the battery, but I don't know if more voltage will change any fundamental aspects of the system.

To elaborate, I have read many times that 16v amplifiers will die really quickly on a 12v system. I don't know if I'll be 16v or not with the DC, but if so, does that rule work both ways?

EDIT: Just thought of another question. Should I run power line from my 1st battery to my 2nd, or should it be powered right off of the alt? Also, should my 2nd battery be grounded, or should it run to the negative terminal of the 1st battery?

Dc charges at 14.8 you'll be fine

Very cool, thanks! How would I wire my 2nd battery though? Hook positive of both batteries together, or hook positive of 2nd battery to alt? Also, would I hook ground to ground, or would I hook my second battery to frame (which would also connect my batteries).
