No. As someone who has lost pieces of my heart and soul...sympathy gets old and annoying. THAT being said, a little something saying you haven't forgotten and are there for them...that means the world. A card or something written to that effect I think would be great and show you're a friend who just isn't there for the good times and just doesn't say he will be there when the times get tough...you will actually be there.

Tell me...does this smell like chloroform to you?
