Subwoofer Cancellation

Recommended Posts

I understand it might be hard to just explain with this open of a topic but id like to learn anything about subwoofer cancellation that anyone can share with me...

Instances where placement and direction might cause it? I understand out of phase woofers will cause it I'm talking more on the lines of...

ALL woofers are properly wired but DB are lost because of box design and sub firing direction.

Yeah just read through that one. Seemed like all stuff you would see on "how its made" or something like that. I was wondering from people who are in the sport and can tell me from experiences.

wow, sorry that didn't help...

thats actually a pretty good ? and ive been wondering about that myself, the only way that i could think to do it is to reasearch wave lengths and how they travel and distances traveled per wave then look at the reflection factor and where the wavelengths meet - to + that would be cancellation, but ive also been wondering if you could have cancellation with just one sub the reflecting wave hits the cone at an opposite wave but i just havent had the time to do the research and math lol

im not sure on the math part, i just herd someone say that in JP's tahoe with 10 18's PSI, that his first 8 were fine but the 2 facing forward are canceling out sound. I sat in it over spring break nationals and it was the loudest daily driver there hands down. I was just curious if those back two are actually canceling the other 8.

If you don't know JP, just picture chickens caddy with two more 18's facing forward at the back.

all i know is two things... His tahoe was stupid loud... and when i do 4 15's in a civic i don't need my subs to cancel.

Well then you need to figure out the distance that all of your speakers are going to be away from each other and the trajectory. Then figure out the frequencies each speaker will be playing. Then figure out the length of the sound wave of each frequency. Then at what point each frequencies wave will interact with each other to determine at what point they will begin to cancel each other out.

Thats the part i havent gotten to yet lol, but i do know one thing cancellation will only happen at a specific frequency with a rollon(i guess u could say since it'd get louder)

Once you figure in wattage, voltage, and all the other variables along with outside noise it's impossible to get an exact figure. Unless you are going for straight DBz I wouldn't make that the focus of your build. This is a hobby and a sport to have fun with, enjoy the build and then enjoy ripping it out and starting over again and again. You won't get it right the first time and if you do you'll still want to redo it lol. And feel free to ask and learn from all of SMD, we have all spent thousands of dollars and thousands of hours in cars ;)
