98' Ford Escort Zx2 - Beginning of a Rebuild

Recommended Posts

The valve seat drop is mostly cars that over heat and not taken care of. NO matter the milage. There has been reports of drops at 90k. I have a escort and I dropped a valve seat due to engine over heat. Put a new motor in for $100 and I damn sure keep a eye on the temp. I spent $100 on the motor and close to $200 for parts on it to be replaced.

That is also true except two motor types. As far as her car gose it has never been hot the aluminum head was perfect minus the valve seat. Also 21,436 cars with the same prob says something. The local ford shop shop it is due to the seat not being set right in the head with two different metals expanding and contracting at different rates.Causes the ring to crack then eventually busting up.If caught early enough you can just replace the head and go.$100 dollars seriously not fair it cost $1425 for her car. Didn't have to replace the motor just the head, two pistons, two injectors and the catalytic converter. Unlike the DD/CC-1 very little is build with pride anymore just make it as fast as they can and get rich. Thanks for adding the extra info I forgot to put in.Either way it sucks when it happens that's for sure.

I had to replace the motor. It destroyed the piston and probably ruined the rod. Crank bearings were shot on that one piston. That was going to be over $500 for bearings and probably another $400 for a reman head. I do the work myself. So that was just raw prices. Some 2.0s had the same issue. All you gotta do to fix it is get a remaned head or have the valve seats changed and the head resurfaced and all that good stuff.

Wow that sucks we got lucky.Yes sir that's right we got a lucky break.Got a new complete head for 364 so no complaints here.

$900 this past March to pass inspection... new exhaust, new tie rods, new brakes, and some other junk. Recently I hear a high pitch whistle when I get into the high RPMs (4000) when accelerating quickly  I should have the car inspected soon for any problems because this one scares me.

Looks like you're keeping everything nice and clean so far. I like the bass knob placement and the switch you have. Thanks for de-ricing it lol.

Thanks a lot, I have seen builds where people have done that, plus I don't have a lot of room in the car to hold stuff now that I have my special input bracket that I made and screwed into the front compartment.

I'm still waiting on that damn power wire to get here along with the RCAs. I called USPS but they said they don't know where it is so it looks like that's $30 down the drain. After I get the box built I'm going to order some speaker terminals to mount on the box and I'll just buy power wire by the foot from the local car audio store.

A high pitched whistle could be anything. A vaccum leak or just something weird. The valve seat issue has a distinct sound. Mine ticked for MONTHS and I thought it was the lower end. Then I sat too long with the car running and it started stumbling and so I drove it. Had a bit of power sometimes. Then my step dad came home from work and said the car is making a hell of a noise. Sure enough the sound was like the engine was about to blow up. Also encountered resistance when turning the motor over by hand.

Leave the issue alone. If it's running the way it's supposed to don't worry about it. Keep the maintence up on it. If you see odd temps take a peak at it.

Valve seat missing, intake side. I actually tore apart the block and found the rest of the seat at the bottom.

This is really helpful, I'll look into doing the big 3 in my car if it helps that much. It's hard with time and money right now, but hopefully later in the summer I'll do a log on how to do the big three for noobs like me lol.

It'll be fine just don't forget to fuse the power wire next to the alt and next to the batt. That way if it shorts out it won't mess up the alt.It SUCKS being tight on money in a build. But it defenitly makes it more than worth the while imoa. Still sucks lol! Don't most of us whisk for more time in a day.

Alright, so today I was able to get out to the hardware store and buy a couple goodies for the box.

I didn't get it all done, I still need to caulk it and get more screws in it, and paint it. But I did get enough done to do a test fit in the car... and it clears!!!

Goodbye trunk space :dammit:

Goodbye trunk space LOL.You got a back seat to carry stuff.

at least I'll remove the baby bazooka and put the back seats down to make room for some bigger things. I need to get my hands on some L-brackets too to make it secure. Was this what you were looking to do for your wife's car? I rarely have passengers so it won't be so bad unless I'm moving a lot of luggage.
