loganuf
i got a L5 kicker off a 650.1 kicker amp at two ohms. I bought the sub and amp used. Well I cant get my box until christmas but I just wanted to see if everything worked tonight so I hooked it all up and played the sub naked. Everything was going fine until I smelt a burning stench. At first I thought the smell came from the amp but I then smelled the sub and it definately came from the sub. I didn't see any visible smoke but I could still smell the odor nonetheless. Another thing is, even when the radio was off (car on still), my sub was still getting power. Like I could feel the vibration. And when I closed the doors the sub would go in and out like it was beating but it didn't make a boom. So what is going on here? The sub was beating but it had an unfriendly smell. The amp can't be overpowering it because its not that strong. Any explanations would be much appreciated. pstone11
I'd take a meter to that sub just to see what it's sitting at right now. Out of all the subs I've ever owned, the square kickers seem to have the smelliest of all voice coils.. Quote Check out StoneSounds to see my recent builds.Or look at the Flying White Facebook Page! loganuf
But the sub isn't new. It is used but it hasn't been used in a while. So is this normal? My friend has two L7 15s and they never made any smells at all, even when they were new. dbwesz
yeah it can be cause the sub is not in an enclosure, some people do it for fun or testing it like that but i dont like it 2 play with a sub whitout an enclosure, so it CAN BE that's the problem but im not sure, cause a sub is sub and every sub is different Quote Alpine HU 9855R IPODRE XXX compo, 2nd one is comingrockford t8004 amp ( 4 channel ) rockford (4x) T30001bd mono amps @ 0,5 ohm for dailyRE Audio 18'' MT (2 x) Enclosure is 400 LITER tuned on 28HZ28HZ - 150db TL 200731HZ - 152db TL 2007Max Score 157,4db TL 2008 @35hz----------------------------------------------NEW INSTAL UNDERCONSTRUCTION!!ALPINE HU 9855RIPOD4 RE XXX COMPONENT SETS4 RE COAXIAL SETS4 FI BTLS 18'' SUBS8 RF T4000BD'S MONO AMPS4 RF T8004 4 CHANNEL AMPS16 northstar nsb 125 batts70mm wiring10 RF 100 farad powercaps

jasonw30
how hard did you play it free air and how long? Quote 2002 nissan frontier crewcab eclipse cd2000 mb quart prem's fr&rear rf p4004
loganuf
how hard did you play it free air and how long? Well at first I had the volume on like 1/3 of the way and played if for like 10 seconds. Then I turned it up a lot louder to like 3/4 of the way. After about 9 seconds I started smelling something kinda bad. rusty959
free-air, it is easy to have a sub reach it's limits a lot easier than in a box, for that matter I had my dual 4 s15L7 free air wired at 8 ohms when I first got it wired to a home audio amp and I could get it to get to full excursion at less than half volume, probably only giving it 50 watts, so... you might have just been pushing it too hard, I'd suggest not doing anything free-air... wait on the box Quote 2013 Subaru BRZ12" Orion HCCA on AQ 22001967 mustang restoration project: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110765-mustang-restoration-build-2011-edition/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/therusty959
Tub Asko
I get a burning smell from my 2 l7 subs after they play around 30 min. I think it's just the voice coils heating up. Quote Facebook Youtube Murdered '07 Silverado
