Great stuff here mate, good to see everything is coming along nicely. Shame about the cars being sensibly sized back home, here in the states if it's not a land yacht it's a bicycle. I myself am an expatriate from Reading, who long ago came to the US to work. Quite the transition, only marked improvement being that I can make a right on red here, honestly. Also, if it exists on this earth and you need buy it be assured you can have it within the hour. Should you reside anywhere but the US, better luck to you.

Anyhow, keep up the top work, I'm eagerly awaiting the finished build!

That's awesome that you could fit dual alts on the motor, can't wait to see the rest of the build

It really is, hopefully should keep the voltage up nicely!

I'm guessing FI Sp4 15's maybe!!!

What gave it away?! Ha

I don't think the Americans know how lucky they are, I've even seen people refer to 3litre beasts as being small! I'm just grateful that dual alts were possible, I may investigate and see if we can fab up a third alt somewhere too!

Good to know there are some British people on here, even if you are an ex-pat, funnily enough even though I live miles away in West Yorkshire I do have some family in the Reading area - Earley to be more precise.

As for the build now that we have all the equipment the car is with the installer who should be starting work this week. There is a lot to do as I'm changing the brakes and suspension at the same time as well getting some body panels resprayed. All being well I should be booming within the next week or so.

Though I've quickly grown accustomed to the luxuries available here I must agree with you that the cars most find "normal" are absolutely monstrous, nearly offensive, compared to those in the UK and Europe. My work vehicles is a GMC Jimmy, a "small" SUV that has a 4.3 litre V6 stuffed under the hood, there is no degree of finesse about it, it's heavy, roomy, high off the ground, and drives like a freight car with a petrol engine strapped to the front end of it.

I can't believe the size of that alternator you got your hands on, let alone that you fit another under the hood along with it! Living in Florida it's much like being in a humid oven for about 3/4 of the year, so I can't imagine sacrificing my A/C compressor for an alternator. If you wedge a third alternator in your little Audi you're absolutely mad, and not at all in a bad way! ;) Keep on it!

Well I can't take all the credit for it, some of the UK found the unit quite a few years ago. They pretty much directly replace most the alts of most VAG engines. Hopefully once it's all up and running I should be able to supply 500a of power on demand, if a third alt can be fitted then maybe I'll up the power a little.

Luckily as you know warm weather isn't that common over here. The condenser unit at the front of the car is broken, probably pierced by some road debris, so it was either fix it for around £150 or strip out the ac system for more alt power - easy decision!

so, when can we get some pics of the subs?

This is the best I can do for now -

The SP4s should be amongst them somewhere. I had them delivered directly to the person doing the install. Once he cracks on I'll be certain to put the pics up on here as and when - if not I should have the car back in a week or two so will be putting up plenty of pics and vids ;)

Goodness you've given your poor installer some work then, haven't you? Not sure I'd know how to fit that all in the little Avant! Of course losing the A/C for alternator power was the right move just wouldn't do it where I live. It was 36c out today with nearly 90% humidity and I was certain that my trainers would melt to the pavement if I stood about for too long. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned the liveable car checklist in the UK is this: Does it start? Does it run? Does the heat work? Does it leak? Is it an air-cooled Beetle? Never buy a convertible, those buggers will spring a leak when you least expect it, if it's an air-cooled Beetle it won't start in the rain.

You don't even know the half of it lol. Another 2 runs of 0 gauge need putting through the car, the volt meter needs rewiring to the new amp, there's a parasitic drain somewhere in the car that needs to be sorted, got water coming into the cabin somewhere so that needs to be traced and dealt with. In terms of bodywork the front end is getting resprayed, along with both side skirts with one being a new replacement, few scratches here and there to sort out and a bit of rust on one of the rear offside panels. Not forgetting the actual box for the sub and making up a battery tray in the rear wheel well. A big job to say the least!

Well it's cold and wet here right now, the AC certainly isn't being missed lol.

Have you checked the weatherstripping? That's the source of most non-convertible leaks in my experience. Make sure all of your wiring and battery terminals are clear of corrosion and if they aren't cleaning them off ought to route that parasitic drain. Of course there's bodywork, there's always bodywork! Sounds like it will all come together brilliantly, once the money is spent of course.

Literally hundreds of pounds have spent on trying to find the problem. Heck one garage tried blaming the NSB75 battery up front saying it was too big and was causing flooding somewhere near the battery tray, that has been replaced with a smaller battery but the problem is still there. Numerous seals have been changed, drain plugs removed and yet it's still there! The front battery is brand new with clean terminals, I suspect the drain is to do with the refitting of my first 210a alt, I think the garage wired the relay up incorrectly using a perm live instead of a switched one. We'll see what my installer comes up with.

Just to give you an idea of who is actually building the install for me, it's the owner and builder of this little car:

That could be it. Bet you would get an idiot light, though. Probably something obscure, the last thing you'll think of...

As for your installer, he does some intense work!
