How do you choose caliber and your ammo for Self Defense Carry

Recommended Posts

I am writing a paper on reasons why people choose the weapons they do for self defense and why they choose the ammo they do... I would like some input from you guys on your reasoning for

Choosing the Ammo you did

Choosing the brand of weapon

Choosing the caliber

Any other information that influenced your choices... The more info i can get the better my paper will turn out so i appreciate it :)

My most carried weapon is Glock for reliability and the fact that I'm quick and very accurate with them. Most of the time it's a 9mm due to capacity, lower recoil allowing more accurate and quick follow ups, and with the right ammo is very effective. All my 9mm's are loaded with Winchester rangers either in a 124gr or 147gr. I also carry Glock .45's once in a while just to change it up. Both are loaded with 230gr Hornaday TAP ammo. If you want any other info just ask.

He was taunting me. He's all like "come at me bro!" So I'm like "I'm coming at you bro!" And he's like "hey, fuck you" *chomp*. Then I killed it. I win.

One thing I firmly believe in and I'm sure you've heard it before is that the best gun and caliber is the one you can use effectively. I've run into so many people that are all about a specific brand or caliber but can't shoot it for shit. If you're carrying a weapon for protection you have to realize that if you are ever in a situation where you need it it will be very fast and high stress so if you aren't good with your weapon in a normal or relaxed setting how are you going to be in a bad situation?

That is a GREAT point that I will put into my paper for sure... So many people dont think about that and most of the time they never have to face the music when it comes to life or death but god forbid that does happen....

That is why i choose to carry my 1911... I am accurate with my G23 and it has saved my life in more than one life/death encounter but as far as comfort level i like my 1911 because I seem to handle it better at the range... But as stated i can shoot either one accurately and would trust my life to either :)

I chose my weapon only after buying and owning over 25 handguns. My 3 favorites are the HK P7, it has one the best trigger right out of the box of any handgun. It has the same grip angle as the glock which I like and it has a metal frame. As well as being super reliable. Number 2 is any 2nd or 3rd gen 9mm glock. I love the grip angle, super easy the take down, and very difficult to make puke.Nunber 3 Browning Hi-Power even Browning himself claimed it was an improvement over the 1911.

I use Speer Gold Dot ammo because it cycles flawless in the guns I've owned. I heard good things about Gold Dots and seen where the hollow point mushroom well. Other than that a don't know about the ammo, never tested it first hand. I like the 9mm cause it's the most controllable caliber that I trust. Super fast follow up shots with it, and cause the kick is light I can practice more. These are all just my opinions. I know the P7 gets way too hot to practice with after 100 rounds it's so hot I can't shoot it anymore. It weighs a ton and only holds 8+1.

When I determined my weapon and bullet of choice I looked at the following items:

Bullet

1. Human penetration depth.

2. I also don't want it going through the walls too far. I would hate for it to go into my neighbors' homes.

3. Noise. I don't want to loud of a bullet. "No .44 magnum"

Gun

1. Magazine capability. I want a decent amount of rounds just in case there are more than one intruder.

2. Gun reliability.

3. Sights. I prefer the ones you can see at night.

4. Rail system for adding a laser and light combo.

5. Must be small for easy maneuvering.

What I have

  • The handguns I have are the Glock 21sf and a Glock 17 both feature Glock night sights.
  • I have a Glock light/laser combo that goes on the rail. Currently attached to my 21sf. The light is bright enough to blind the intruder and it gives me a way to aim quickly.
  • My bullets of choice are hollow point 9mm and .45. I use these due to their rapid expansion qualities.
  • I also have my Glock 17 setup for blanks. Just in case my daughter is grabbed. I will toss it to them and have my 21sf in my back pocket.
  • Both loaded guns are kept in a quick access safe. I just put my hand on the top of it and it opens up. This also keeps my daughter out.
  • Oh yeah I forgot one important thing, a dog. This can be your best home defense weapon if they are trained properly. I have trained my dog to sleep up stairs with my daughter. The dog will also let me know when someone is trying to get in and if they do I pitty them.
  • I also have an empty shotgun that sits next to my bed. How many intruders do you think will leave once they hear the pump shotgun loading?

Another must thing for home protection is practice. I get my fiance to randomly try to get in the back door, with alarm active, and see how long it takes the dog and myself to respond. You be surprised how fast you get with lots of practice.

I just read this post and said to myself I must be crazy. lol. I will tell you one thing though, I bet if someone tried to get into my house they are leaving in a black bag.

I hope this helps you out LT Smoke.

Matt
