Dillan Turvold
The box I have is 15x32x20, 2 separate chambers, each w/ a pvc port 3" x 8 1/2", tuned @ 30hz -2.1 cu. ft. per chamber~ It's peaking out really low.. I'd say around 34hz, it drowns out the mid-bass almost completely. I'm relatively new to box designing, and I don't really know much about how a design affects the sound quality... I tuned it to 30hz to hit the lows really nicely ( which it does ), but I'm missing the midbass, should I just cut the pvc shorter to raise the tuning or will that not really make much of a difference? Is there possible to little of port area? Subs- 2 kenwood 12"s, 4ohm @ 400wrms, 2 cu. ft. recommended per chamber, running on a kenwood 1800w d-mono amp. ( 900w rms ) I'm running the subs parallel on 2 ohm @ 450wrms a piece (not benched so I don't know the exact wattage) Edited June 1, 2012 by Dillan Turvold
will77530
shortening your ports will bring up your tuning
b-dubs89
i am in the same boat as you with learning about box design , there are many people on smd that will tell you a ported box with good design and tuning can sound awsome , but every ported box i have built has been peaky somewhere through out the range and i didn't much like any of my ported boxes i have built as opposed to a sealed box for the same woofer . the link i added is for a port calulator i had found a while back not to sure how right on this is but it is fun to play with http://www.mobileinformationlabs.com/HowTo-1Woofer-Box-CAL%20Port%20lenth%201.htm
Dillan Turvold
shortening your ports will bring up your tuning yes I mentioned that in my post.. but will that help the peaking being so low, and bring back the mid-bass?
b-dubs89
if your set up is smashing the lows pretty well , maybe getting some midbass drivers would be a better solution to your problem , i have had some alpine type r's and a rockford t1 15" and they both smashed the lows but had no midbass really . skittlesRgood
your port is way too small. and i mean WAAAYYY too small. what do you have for midbass? usually people go with heavy sub stages dont care about midbass and its pretty well always drowned out. i mean, a 6.5" speaker isnt going to keep up with a 12" speaker on 5x the power. just not going to happen. you would either need to install 8"s, or get a nice pair of 6.5" midbass drivers if you want any shot at hearing them over the subs. Guest
its peaky probably because the ports are way small.
