Can an Extreme SPL vehicle compress a balloon inside the sealed chamber

Recommended Posts

Since it is highly discouraged to have someone site inside an extreme SPL vehicle, 170db+, I'm curious what it would do to a balloon that is sealed inside the compression chamber.

I know that the woofers apply pounds of pressure in it's compression stroke and create a vacuum draw of pressure of equal strength, so for someone to sit inside a pressure chamber, if they could keep their mouth and nose closed they may be somewhat alright, but what I think happens is that when you open your mouth, the system's air vacuum draws the air out of your lungs so rapidly that it could rip your lungs and diaphragm, because it's basically trying to "pull" pull those organs out of your mouth, since especially the diaphragm is what moves to help you breathe.

But as far as if a person sat inside will it "crush" you? If an extreme vehicle has the compression chamber so rigid that the walls will not flex then something's gotta give. So, I'm thinking that the bass compression from the speakers would cause a balloon to burst from the amount of new pressure exerted onto it.

Also, when they had vacuum chambers outlawed, did competitors actually hook a pipe to the sealed chamber, and suck air out of it? And did the woofers pull forward from doing this? (I know this a crazy thought but curious to know).

Oh, and this is different from putting something in front of a port of an enclosure. The woofers apply pounds of air pressure that can rip or forcefully impact anything that is in the path of it's air drawing port.

Yes balloons pop in an extreme car, But they pop due to vacuum. It makes the pressure inside the balloon blow the balloon outwards.

And as far as outlawing vacuum chambers, they actually outlawed the use of compressed air or gas.

I believe the Gates bronco had nitrogen at one point and would vacuum seal the doors and pump the cabin with gas.

I think it pops on compression. The only way to really test this is to put a small balloon in a sealed box for a 15" woofer, tape it to a side and a camera and a small flash light do a sweep test. The sealedness of the box will eliminate the potential for "air traffic" coming into or exiting the box. or use a box that is sealed with a plexiglass.

That test wont help you determine whether the pop happens on the compression or vacuum. You would need a high speed camera.

Yea, I know let me find someone with a Phantom camera and see if their willing to for this project.
