enclosure volume port area and how many watts waht is the connection ?

Recommended Posts

Ive read some where that if subwoofer with Power Handling of 2000watts and i run it on 3400watt amp

its a must to reduce the net volume of the enclosure and the port area.

why is that ?

how can i know if i over power it and how much volume i need to reduce ?

Is there a article about the connection with how many watts and the volume and port area ?

the port area is determined by the net volume of the box. so as the box shrinks the port area needs to do the same. the reason for making the box smaller to handle more power is the smaller box will create more "back pressure" on the sub. but you have to be careful when doing that

So if i understand what you say we creating back pressure to cancel the over powering ?

Is this a correct analogy:

If crane can lift 20 pounds (equals to power handling of the sub) and i gave him extra 10 pound ability to his engine(amp) but didn't reinforced the metal or structure (sub motor cone ...) so i need a force (back pressure) to reduce it to 20 pounds so i wont fail.

No, No, No!!!

The box can shrink to help the mechanical power handling, but the port area does not have to.

One more time - port area is not dependent on box volume. . .

People need to get out of the 13-16sq" of port per ft idea

It just a rule of thumb

The port area has more to do with cone area, Xmas and power then net volume of box

A 12" sub with 15mm Xmas does not nees the same size port area as a 12" sub with 50mm Xmas, because they both recomend 1.5-2cuft net

Post what sub you have and what amp and wiring configuration your planing on running,

And some diamenshions for where it's going

Big3, alt upgrade, and what ever else you have,

And well try to help you out

I'll take it a step further and say that technically power does not matter. A sub might reach 20mm of excursion on 1000 watts in one design and 20mm of excursion on only 500 watts in another design.

You really have to just account for full excursion, unless you are really trying to minimize port area. At that point I would model the design with the max input power and see what the max excursion would be.

I asked this because i am hearing this for a while so i wanted to know why is that and how u can know what port and box volume to design for each

configuration.

This is what i want to put in my car and got waiting for level 5 to come out and mono to arrive :

Hertz HSK165XL

Celestra 475x (if you don't know this amp here is the specs: http://www.celestra....hede/FA475x.pdf )

DC Audio Level 5

DC Audio 3.5K

120AMP stock alternator (High output alternator kinda hard to find for my car i live aboard US and the car maker inst on the US + don't got the money for it for now)

Big 3 with 0 gauge

1 run from the front to back of 0 gauge

KnuKonceptz Kolossus Fleks Kable 1/0

From amp to sub KnuKonceptz Karma SS 8 Gauge Speaker Wire

Xs power 5100 on the engine bay

Xs power 3100 on the back

this is my max sizes for the box:

Height: 21 inch

Width: 35 inch

Depth: 18 inch

your got around 4net @ 31hz to work with

so without knowing the sub your using there isnt much more i can do,

a assume its a dcl5 18, but if it a 15" you have more then enough space for it

im going on 12 inch for now hopefully to add in the future a second sub and mono.
