Looking into getting a Gaming PC for about $1400

Recommended Posts

So I totally shit the bed and never updated this thread with a list of suggested hardware. Here's what I've picked out. Feel free to ask questions or give feedback.

CPU: Intel Core-i5 3570K - $230 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO - $215 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131819

SSD: Samsung 830 series 128GB - $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147163

HDD: Seagate 1TB 7200RPM - $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840

GPU: EVGA GTX 670 FTW - $400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130802

Case: BitFenix Raider Mid-tower - $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811345009

RAM: G.Skill ARES 8GB (2x4GB) - $45 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231546

PSU: XFX 650W modular - $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207022

CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 - $65 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181015

Optical Disk: ASUS DVD Burner - $19 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204

PSU extension cable - $5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812226050

That puts my cart at $1385 shipped to my front door. Should be the same to ship to New Mexico. A machine with these specs would RIP apart current games and games for years to come. The motherboard will run 2 cards no problem so you've even got room to upgrade.

I hope this helps!

wtf is lolcats?

I'd def get a fat hooker if i had to resort to that kinda thing. I feel like they'd be grateful and work harder. Also its more bang for my buck, more real estate for my dollar if you catch my drift. its like the Costco of streetwalkers.

I was hoping for 150 :(.

I was hoping she would let me put it in her butt

I'll admit, half way through sanding that fiberglass in the rain and cold while I was all itchy I was definitely starting to question why i was doing this haha

I would suggest looking at the websites ibuypower or cyberpower both of which allow you to pick and choose what parts you want it built with and from what I have come to understand they are both reliable. I have had a computer from cyberpower for about 2-3 years now and I'm still able to run games like skyrim maxed out and have encountered no issues with hardware being installed wrong. Ibuypower if I'm not mistaken is also one of the major sponsors for some of the mlg gaming circuits if that helps support their legitimacy. But from both companies you get to choose everything from the case up.

Oh if we're naming sites like that, I gotta go with actually a local shop near me. stealthmachines. I found their site a few years ago, did some research and found maybe 1 bad review total about them so I placed an order. As Derrikm said, it's one of those sites that lets you pick what you want. Well, I did that and the actual owner called me and we went over everything on the phone. Have had the computer for over 2 years, maybe 3. Absolutely ZERO problems. But I went pretty high end and spent 2 grand.

i'd upgrade the CPU. That one is solid, yes, but if your going big... go all out. I'm not sayin to spend $1200 on that 690 GPU that recently came out but could do a better CPU without spending all that much more. Otherwise, seems like one hell of a build.

Upgrade the CPU or the GPU? Those are 2 separate parts. CPU is the processor (the Core-i5). GPU is the graphics card (GTX 670). You'd be hard-pressed to upgrade either in the sample rig I posted without making some serious performance cuts elsewhere.

Thanks for all the tips guys and thanks for the List Maxim that sounds like a great rig, if I were to add a second 670 later, would I need to upgrade my Power Supply, if so would it hurt for me to have a larger power supply with the current single 670?

Some people would say yes. I'd honestly say no. 650 watts should easily be enough for 2 670's in that rig. 2 GTX 670's in SLI pull about 10-15 watts less than a GTX 690 under full load. The GTX 690 recommends a 650W PSU so you're right on target with a 650W unit for 2 cards in this machine.
