Questions about another battery

Recommended Posts

Hey guys i have a question. So I have a XS D3400 under the hood and in the mail i have a Mechman 270 amp alt. I will have a run of zero to that with a 250 amp fuse inline. and i will have two grounds off the negative. I am wondering if i get another battery does it have to be the same size battery or can it be a smaller one if i even need one. I am going to power a 3.5k and two level 4 10s for now.

also i am confused on how to run the wire to two batteries can someone clear that up for me please. i feel like a noob but i never have though about running more than one. eventually i will need to know how to with more builds. anyways if someone could help me with the underlined parts it would be great thank you!

Battery can be a smaller one if you want. I would get a xp3000 for the back and be done with it. As to hooking them up, It's as easy as connecting the positive to positive and negative to negative ( or a nice chassis ground in the back). Just make sure you fuse within 18" of front batt and 18" before the rear battery and you're good to go.

you can pick up a chick in a car... I think it'd be hard to roll up mackin on a broad sittin on a sundown. My opinion

Also be sure to do the big 3, Step that fuse up to a 300 amp since you would be running a 270 alt and the wire shouldn't be over 5ft or so. (Big 3 charge wire).

Question about that. To get all technical, if you connect the smaller one to the bigger one, what happens with the current? Like if you crank it to start the car, does the power come from the bigger one, or both? And the alternator charges which? I get what you mean about how to wire them, just wondering about the technical aspect of it.

Well i would think the front battery would take most of the hit while turning on the car, Seeing as it is closer to the starter and will have more CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) then the smaller one.(if we are talking same brand) But basically when connecting them together they will act as one bigger battery. Not 100% sure but thats my theory.

Also the alternator would charge up the front battery and that battery will charge up the other one, Now say you have a run to the front batt and a run to the back off of the alt, That should be a more efficient way of keeping them charged seeing as they will "split" the amperage.

And then comes the question of if you have it like that, where does the power come from for everything? Would you run headlights, interior lights, tail lights and such off of one battery and system off another? I mean if you everything hooked to your front one, why would you need a run to the back battery from the alt? Most of the power would ultimately come from the front battery so you'd want most of the alt's effort on the front one. Unless I'm a giant noob and fail at mechanics, which can be possible.

Seeing as they are tied in together, It becomes one, so when one is struggling a little thats when the "backup" power comes into play and helps take a load off of the main batt.

Lets put it this way, I think in some years the Impala SS had a v8 that only fired 4 cylinders under a light load but when you needed those extra ponies while you were trying to Race/Pass/Climb hills, All you had to do was stomp on the gas and feel the awesome muscle of that v8. Essentially two engines becoming "one" to get the load stabilized.
