wet cell dry cell

any issue running a wet parallel with a dry? im thinking of adding this 3rd duralast gold (wet) parallel to a yellow top, then the yellow top to a kinetik HC 600. any issues with that?

no not really an issue. If in series then yeah, youre only as good as the worst peforming batt.

Yellow tops, arent they the ones used for lawnmowers and other electric machines? From what I understand, the reds have a higher CCA and give more amps burst, the yellows give less amps burst, and the blues are marine, which last the longest, but dont give much burst....

no, yellowtops are like red tops, but they have 2 sets of term. made for running asses on 1 and your car on another

yellows and reds are quite different. you can discharge a yellow top multiple times and it will be fine. do the same thing to a red top though and it will be a paper weight.

There are indeed issues with running different batts.

Especially batts of different chemisties.

An AGM style batt like XS or Kinetik or Optima will have a slightly higher resting voltage than any wet cell. They also have a lower ESR than wet cells.

This means that when just sitting with no load, and the batteries are connected in parallel, the higher voltage AGM will push a current to the wet cells. Once the wet cell is charged higher than it should be, the AGM will be slightly lower and a current will be pushed back to the AGM.

This will continue over and over causing the plates to build up a small amount of heat and reduce the life span of the batteries and kill them if not recharged frequently.

Now if you always have your car running or a charger constantly plugged in, this won't be as much of an issue.

There are indeed issues with running different batts.

Especially batts of different chemisties.

An AGM style batt like XS or Kinetik or Optima will have a slightly higher resting voltage than any wet cell. They also have a lower ESR than wet cells.

1998 Pontiac grand prix gtp supercharged2 12" Obsidain Audio V.1 on a 2011 zx1500.1 at 2 ohms. 20ft of Knuconceptz CCA 0 Guage. 2nd Battery is a Shurken BT-120. Box is 3.5cu tuned at 31.8hz sealed off from the trunk. 14sqft of Dynamat on the Rear deck top & bottom. Soon to be more for doors/roof. Gets low & loud

Did a 140.5 Sealed at Battle of the boom in June 2013 dropping to 12.7v (need a alt mines going bad)

if you leave it sit for a day or 2 it will be fine most likely, but if your not gunna drive your car for a while or more than 3 days without haveing a charger on it then disconnect the AGM from the wet cell. pretty much if the alt isnt charging them or the charger isnt charging them for more than 48 hours disconnect other wise you should be fine.

Oops last week I went on a mini vacation for 4 days and my car sat at home.

wow new info! thanks HHR Ed! I've got the red top and was gonna put in my Kinetic 2300's on top of that. But I think I'll swap the red top for the Kinetic 1200 for the engine batt. Then they;ll all be AGM...

Optimas are AGM.

Like stated above, this mostly is only a concern when the car will sit for a couple days or more with no alternator running or no charger plugged in and to alleviate the issue you can disconnect the batts from each other.

However, even without sitting, the lifespan of the wet cell will be cut short, these days a good wet cell can last 3 years, if connected to an AGM and the car driven daily to charge, you still may cut that life down to a year. depends on the brand and quality of that battery though, most cheap wet cells are recycled lead which has a shorter life to begin with.
