ear2ear Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 The ones I get from McMaster Carr get installed with an allen wrench / pack / socket. You can get them with or without flanges, different threads, different lengths. A bag of 50 was only 9 bux. wellington Posted September 11, 2012 Author Report Posted September 11, 2012 Looks like you would have to get the exact length in the bolt you would use? t-nuts are a little easier since you can use any length. Well I use some of that sealant on the t-nuts and I'm letting them sit. Hopefully this will be good enough. oh yeah and I sanded all the screw holes down on the top, so they are all flat now. that should also help upload picture 2010 HHR LT - DNX 6160 - sony xec-700 - sony xm-4040 for door mids - XM-6020 for tweets in a-pillar - saz1500d v1 - VVME RD-12 1.75 f^3 32hz guru and president of the "cheap asses trying to beat up the block with bargain bin woofers" club
Captain Stupid Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 You can use any length with inserts also if you just wanna drill the hole all the way through. Only difference is that the threads are in the center of your hole instead of at the bottom. With an insert you could also run a long bolt straight through it like in your pics. 2006 Cadillac Escalade 2/3 drop on 28" wheels Two RE SX 18" subs RF T2500-1bdCP amp, 3531watts on birthsheet Custom carbon fiber sub box EVERYTHING else is stock, for now 149.4 @ 37hz, Termlab, dash, open window on two AQ3 18s all stock electrical, wired to .25 ohm on a RF T2500 148.8 @ 36hz, Termlab, dash, open window on one AQ3 18 all stock electrical, wired to .5 ohm on a RF T2500 147.8 @ 38hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on two RE SX 18s 146.4 @ 36hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on one RE SX 18 Link to my hack-built, stupid, carbon fiber wasting project.... http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/149946-carbon-fiber-box-update-1494db-37hz-on-tl/ http://gifsoup.com/NDM3MTc1MQ
ear2ear Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 I hope they hold for you. You can use any length bolts for the inserts - they pass right through. wellington Posted September 11, 2012 Author Report Posted September 11, 2012 I hope they hold too I didn't know that about inserts. I still prefer the bolt grabbing the entire half inch of wood rather than just the middle of the wood. Seems like the t-nuts would have more holding power. 2010 HHR LT - DNX 6160 - sony xec-700 - sony xm-4040 for door mids - XM-6020 for tweets in a-pillar - saz1500d v1 - VVME RD-12 1.75 f^3 32hz guru and president of the "cheap asses trying to beat up the block with bargain bin woofers" club

Yes, t-nuts do have more holding strength over standard inserts because they are shouldered. I'll give you that. But if you use the style that ear2ear posted pictures of above, those also have shoulders and could be installed from the bottom just like a t-nut, giving you the same pull-through strength. 2006 Cadillac Escalade 2/3 drop on 28" wheels Two RE SX 18" subs RF T2500-1bdCP amp, 3531watts on birthsheet Custom carbon fiber sub box EVERYTHING else is stock, for now 149.4 @ 37hz, Termlab, dash, open window on two AQ3 18s all stock electrical, wired to .25 ohm on a RF T2500 148.8 @ 36hz, Termlab, dash, open window on one AQ3 18 all stock electrical, wired to .5 ohm on a RF T2500 147.8 @ 38hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on two RE SX 18s 146.4 @ 36hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on one RE SX 18 Link to my hack-built, stupid, carbon fiber wasting project.... http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/149946-carbon-fiber-box-update-1494db-37hz-on-tl/ http://gifsoup.com/NDM3MTc1MQ

They are .795" long and the hex (unthreaded) portion is .175" deep. That's .62" of threads. I drove them in from the back of my baffle and they actually poke through. They have shorter ones though.
