creecher
get a dmm and check your coils first. Do they still move freely if you push down on the cone? any crunchy noises? do they smell that sweet smell of coil death? any visible burns or discoloration to the spiders? what is your box tuned to and how big is it? did you havet he subsonic on your amp on? im guessing you have a leaky box if you could just take the bottom off. big no no. Your amp may be fine. your subs may be ok. they were injured when the smoke came out but usually you'll know if they are toast. You can also take an AA battery and a lead of speaker wrie from each end of the battery and touch one to the pos terminal and one to the neg terminal and see if they pop. Just hit each coil with my DMM. 3 read 1.2-1.3 ohms, one reads 0.06 ohms. Guessing that's my problem right there. As far as moving freely, the one with both coils OK moves fine, but I think I feel/hear rubbing on the one that reads 0.06 on one coil. I think they smell like coil death. I mean, the car still smells today, after driving with the windows down... The box is 2 cubes and tuned to about 40hz. Reason I can still take the bottom off is I'm not finished bracing it. Once that's done this weekend I'm sealing all joints with silicone caulk and finishing the box in speaker coating. I don't have a subsonic filter on my amp, unfortunately. creecher
Just swapped fuses on the amp and plugged it back into just power. It turns on right to protect. Looks like everything's fried. So much for the amp being OK. 2007 Ford Escape V6 My "low-budget college kid build" HU: Pioneer AVIC-X930BT Mids/Highs: Rockford Prime 6.5" M/H Amp: Rockford Prime R250-4 Subs: 2x Rockford Punch P1S4-12 Sub Amp: Rockford Prime R500-1D Wiring: Knukonceptz KCA 4AWG Box: 3/4" MDF, ~2 cubes tuned to ~40hz 5000K HIDs/LED signals and interior lights ...And an SMD VM-1! Guest
unplug the rcas and try it again. dont forget to unhook the subs from the amp too. it could go into protect because of that blown voice coil.
creecher
Kranny, the subs were unhooked too. Curiously, I put the DMM on the speaker terminals of my amp with it off. Reads .75V. My miss/highs amp gives no reading on the speaker terminals. creecher
Just got off the phone with RF. They confirmed that my amp is done, and that the VC reading 0.06 ohms is toast. And then I find out that, thanks to me trying to save a few bucks and buying from an eBay seller, RF won't do any warranty replacements for me. So I'm basically at the mercy of the seller. I should be able to get my amp replaced by them for the relatively small cost (~$10) of shipping the failed one back. The woofers, however, I'm not sure I even want to send back. The listing has this whole spiel about how they won't replace blown woofers. Nothing would piss me off more than spending $20-30 to ship woofers back just to be told that I'm out not only my $120 but my shipping too. At this point, I'm looking at a pair of Punch P1S4-12 woofers as replacement. Sonic has them for $65 free shipping. I can run them at 2 ohms on my R500-1D and not worry about any of this dual voice coil mess. Anyone have any better suggestions for me as to where to go from here woofer-wise? I'm not opposed to a single 15" if you guys think that's the better way to go. (The amp is a definite, I wired and spaced things on my amp board for this amp specifically.) 2007 Ford Escape V6 My "low-budget college kid build" HU: Pioneer AVIC-X930BT Mids/Highs: Rockford Prime 6.5" M/H Amp: Rockford Prime R250-4 Subs: 2x Rockford Punch P1S4-12 Sub Amp: Rockford Prime R500-1D Wiring: Knukonceptz KCA 4AWG Box: 3/4" MDF, ~2 cubes tuned to ~40hz 5000K HIDs/LED signals and interior lights ...And an SMD VM-1!
