New subs (and maybe amp) fried on me

Recommended Posts

Finished installing the build in my sig this past weekend. Worked great, cranked it for most of a 1.5hr highway drive Sunday and a few little trips since. Turned my system on tonight and after about a minute started to smell electronics burning. I had the system at about 20% volume playing some David Bowie, btw, it wasn't cranked.

I stop and pop the hatch and start sniffing. Amps smell fine, sub amp is a little warm but not hot. Then I notice a haze coming out of my ports, the smell was coming from the subs. Since I had my toolbox in the car, I took the bottom off the box to inspect my wiring, and everything looked fine there, as did wiring to and from the amp.

Disconnected the sub box (I put a Speakon pro audio connector on it) and powered the system back on. No power light on the amp. Checked the fuses, and they were pretty clearly blown. I don't have my spare fuses, as I'm at college at they're back home, or I'd have swapped them to test.

So, it's pretty obvious that my subs are done for. But, what does anyone think that the cause of this was? Something in the amp? The subs? Power issue? I doubt power, as my mids/highs amp was and is just fine. This just has me confused. It worked fine, and then all the sudden decided to fry on me.

How is your gain set?

What kind of speaker wire are in the box bc that looks like a lot of wire you don't need. Also what subs are they?

Gain is set to about 6 on the dial. Max is 11. HU puts out 2V, so I don't think I have the gain set too high. In any case, I was barely playing when they went.

Yes, there is some excess wire in the box. It is all 12AWG though. More than sufficient for ~600W. I plan on cutting the excess once I finish bracing the box this weekend.

They are Rockford R2D2 subs. Dual 2 ohm VC. I have them wired at 2 ohms, according to RF's WiringWizard.

Also on the topic of gain, I was planning on getting a DD-1 in the next month or so, but it looks like my DD-1 fund will be replacing my subs. :sigh:

As far as I can tell, your subs are wired right.

No pinched wires?

No loose connections?

Good to know about the wiring. And no, no pinched wires or loose connections. Power into the amp was solid, as was speaker out. Checked inside the Speakon connector as well and all was good there.

Are they svc or dvc? You just said vc, if you said all the wiring was correct and nothing is pinched, loose connections and all the above then it's prob your subs:(

The are DVC subs. Dual 2 ohm coils, coils wired in series for 4 ohms per sub, subs in parallel for 2 ohm load at the amp.

So assuming it's the subs, do you figure my amp will be OK when I swap the fuses? I can deal with ~$120 in new subs, but replacing everything would be pretty rough.

just check all wiring. grounds are most important. make the wire to your subs as short as possible. just check the whole electrical system. if that checks out alright then maybe you have a faulty amp.

get a dmm and check your coils first.

Do they still move freely if you push down on the cone?

any crunchy noises?

do they smell that sweet smell of coil death?

any visible burns or discoloration to the spiders?

what is your box tuned to and how big is it?

did you havet he subsonic on your amp on?

im guessing you have a leaky box if you could just take the bottom off. big no no.

Your amp may be fine. your subs may be ok. they were injured when the smoke came out but usually you'll know if they are toast. You can also take an AA battery and a lead of speaker wrie from each end of the battery and touch one to the pos terminal and one to the neg terminal and see if they pop.
