Who else heats with pellets/corn? (how do you heat your house?)

In my house we use wood pellets and a pellet stove. We have an American Harvest 6039. It does a pretty good job, a bit cheaper than Nat Gas. One thing i like is my hard earned money is not going to a crooked outfit like Kansas Gas Service. The pellets are manufactured in Nebraska. I buy them from a local mom and pop hardware store so I am supporting my community.

This thing burns clean too. The ash pan only needs emptied about once every two weeks when it runs 24/7 on a high setting. When it's in the 30's or so it needs it about once a month.

Mine needs a bit of cleaning right now, the glass tends to get a bit sooty, but mostly because someone bumps the damper down by accident. Plus another nice thing is the top and sides are never hot. I could set a candle up there and it wouldn't melt it. Nice when you have kids and pets.

So, yeah, its kinda dirty right now, but it is a wood stove after all.

We don't use pellets at my house, but we do have a wood burning stove. Being in Alaska, it gets pretty damn cold, so the wood burning stove saves us a lot on the heating bill.

It's a blaze king.

It gets cold, that's for sure. When it gets really cold, I can stand in my driveway and see the northern lights dance though, which is pretty damn cool.

Do you ever toss in a log of hedge with your other firewood? I know some people do that on the really bitter days.

Nope. We burn spruce and birch. The spruce is great for kindling, and the birch burns really hot. Our wood stove also has a built in fan, which is nice. We get most of our firewood from trees that we cut down in our yard.

I'm trying to find a chipper/shredder for the same reason. We have tons of trees and if i could find a shredder that could cut the right size pieces i could blend it in with my pellets.

My dad got a little one from home depot or lowes I think. It does like 3" trees.

Always had Nat Gas heating out here in the city, but my great Grandfather had one up in his little house in rural northern Cali (Ione to be exact) I loved that thing.
