Box Design Help for 2 Old School RF 15's

Recommended Posts

Looking for some help with box design...

I tried Torres calculator, and didnt have much luck when it came to port dimensions etc..

I've been sitting on 2 RF Punch HX2 15's for the better part of a decade, they are still new in box. (Yeah, I know). By the end of this month I want to have them hooked up in my Expedition. The amp that will be pushing them is an RF bd1500.1 and I think the birthsheet said something like 1700 RMS @ 2 ohm. I am leaning towards a subs up port back design. I want to do a double baffle and go for the counter-sunk look. I will probably use 3/4 MDF for the build. I don't mind doing extra work to make the box rock solid, but would prefer to use MDF for everything including any internal bracing. I listen to alot of mainstream music, mostly rap/hip hop. Every now and then some other stuff like LMFAO etc.

The area I have to work with is right at 48" W x 17" H x 20" D

My head unit is a Pioneer AVH-P8400BH

Sub Specs (RFD2215):

  • Voice Coil Diameter-inch = 3.0
  • FS(HZ) = 24
  • QTS = .53
  • VAS (ft3) = 5.76
  • Xmax = .55
  • Power Handling (RMS) = 600
  • Mounting Dia. = 13 13/16
  • Mounting Depth = 6 15/16
  • Speaker Dis. (ft3) = .109
  • Vented Box Vol (ft3) = 2.5
  • Port Diameter and Length (in.) = 4x8

So thats the info straight from the owners manual. I would rather go with a slotted port vs. round like the manual suggests.

Thanks Everyone

Just go with what is recommended. I'd do 5cube with 12 in^2 port per tune in the low 30's. And goddam you been sitting on that for how long now? lol

Can't blame you.... I have a few friends with few 12's sitting in the closet (not brand new though) lol. They're some really decent sub imo.

So here is a suggestion:

Enclosure Specifications:

Fb = 34 Hz

Vb = 5.18 ft^3

External Height = 17 in

External Width = 48 in

External Depth = 18 in

Port Width = 5 in

Cut Sheet List:

* All Dimensions in Inches.

* Wood Thickness is 3/4 for all Parts.

External Enclosure Parts:

2 x Top & Bottom (3 parts) = 48 x 18

Left & Right Sides = 16 1/2 x 14 3/4

2x Front = 21 1/2 x 14 3/4

Back = 48 x 14 3/4

Shared Port Internal Assembly Parts:

2 x Front to Back = 14 x 14 3/4

2 x Extension = 4 1/4 x 14 3/4

Assembly guide (generic dimensions):

45s are 2 1/2" except the ones inside the port, if you intend to do them let me know. Need 5" of free airspace in front of the port for proper operation.

Ok so take a look at this:

TPort-45s.jpg

The 45s inside the port should be made 3 1/2" wide IF the front to back port parts are slanted as shown, the most important thing to make sure of is that at the corner the port width stays at 2 1/2" in both sides, if not the box will fail, if you can't get them right for whatever reason is better not to do them. let me know if you have any other questions.
