I don't have much experience with Nvidia cards but would be interested in them as an option how do you think dual 690's would compare to dual 7970's?

I've just realized 690's are like $1100 each. So 2 would be way overkill. I'm probably going to stay with AMD because I've never used Nvidia Surround View

2 7970's is the best option here. AMD's Eyefinity is a bit more polished than Nvidia's Surround. You don't need 3 cards with the 7970's. 2 would be more than enough for 1080p screens. You'll plug all 3 monitors into one card using the DVI, HDMI, and one Mini DisplayPort connector. You will need an ACTIVE miniDP to DVI adapter to plug in the third monitor. The "active" denotes that the cable contains a chip to convert the DP signal to DVI. Some cards come with active adapters. Some come with passive. Some don't come with an adapter at all. Overkill now is not a bad thing. 2 7970's may seem like overkill for some games but you'll thank yourself in a year or two when there are more demanding games and you don't need to upgrade your cards or lower graphics settings. I had one 6970 originally for my single 1080p screen. I added a second one around a year ago purely because I got a great deal on it. I'm now getting an itch to upgrade to a 2560x1440 or 2560x1600 screen and I'm comfortable knowing that I'll still be able to play games maxed out without having to also invest in a new graphics card in order to keep playing games at high detail settings. If you have the money to invest in better cards I would recommend doing so.

They didn't run 7970's in CrossFire. Kinda surprised to see they skipped it, actually. Tom's is usually better about that kind of stuff.

2 7970's without AA should handle it fine. Even at 2xMSAA it should play around 40-45FPS before overclocking.

You have to keep in mind crossfire and SLI dont scale perfectly. IIRC, you'll get a max of about 80% on a good day. (Maxim I know you know that already)

i have 2 GTX 580's in SLI, 16gigs of ram and i play FarCry on mostly Ultra settings, 5760x1080 (3 27" HP LED's). Oh i can choke it out though if i turn up a couple of the settings to the max. I play Ultra in BF3 with no problems. I would say get 2 GTX 680's in SLI and you should be DAMN good. There probably is not a computer out that can handle every single setting pegged out in FarCry 3 yet. You can have it stunning but a few of those settings can make the best gaming pc beg for mercy Especially on 3 monitors.
