How do you get a nice finish w/ rattle can paint?

Im building a sealed enclosure for the old man. Ive seen alot of nice high quality painting done here but I am looking for something a little more in the middle of the road.

Im going to do it right, counter sink and fill the screws, woodfill the holes, round off the edges. I am not all that well versed in painting but it seems like 50+% of it is in the prep work.

I dont have anything fancy, I dont have spray guns etc. I was thinking 2-3 coats of primer, 2-3 coats of color, 2-3 coats of clear. Obvioiusly you need to sand in between but I dont know what grits.

Does anybody have any good techniques for getting a descent finish out of spray paint?

Just copy what he did (you might even get to skip the glassing) and use rattle cans instead of HPLV guns.

You can use this stuff with great results, just make sure you tack cloth it well or the particles will show up as bumps under it.

Just use an iron your mom has laying around on low to medium setting and on the bottom you'll want to over lap about a 1/4" to seal it, you can use multiple colors and patterns of your choice by cutting and ironing them together to come up with all kinds of cool shapes and whatnot.

They use it to cover radio control airplanes with, just look up radio control planes and you'll get an idea of what the possibilities are which is limitless.

EDIT: when doing pinstripes and such you'll want to use dawn dish soap mixed with water and sprayed on the film to activate the glue and then squeegee the water out and it will bond once dried.
