My LGA 2011 Build

NIC = network interface controller.. (or card)

Thanks for the compliment!

We went with the M4's because of the reliablility. I tested about 30 different SSD's. The write speeds are still faster than any standard platter drive, and with the hardware based garbage collection, they where about 5x more reliable than anything I tested. We did over 30 tb read/write on each drive over the course of a week. The Crucial was the only thing than maintained read/write without having to zero out the drive. As far as the AData Vs the M4, I'll take the M4 any day of the week. I'd rather KNOW that I'm not going to loose data because cells went bad, which is most of the reason they're used in RAID. Unless you have the newer chipsets (some of our legacy desktops dont, and thats about 5000 of them) TRIM isnt supported in a RAID configuration.

As far as the nic, I changed drivers, settings, frames, jumbo frams, 4 different cables, new router, re-did my network DHCP, changed AD settings, blah blah blah. In the end, I got a new NIC.

I started on an apple IIe, programming basic.

I understand the apprehensiveness when talking to other "PC Techs". I would say about 80% have no idea wtf they're talking about. I'll just say this, I'm pretty good. :)

If you're worried about losing data, why would you run just a raid0? I'd be running a mirrored raid10 or a raid01, not just simply a striped raid...I mean sure you can have nightly backups-rotate the drives it backs up to..but that's just a bit silly imo..

Haven't had any issues with my SSD (And I won't once I've setup a raid, as my bios supports trim, as you've mentioned)-although the M4 isn't the problem, it's the controller..you're not going to get the write speeds on that Marvell controller that you would on a SandForce..

PS: I work throughout NOVA DC & MD :morepower1:

I host a GIANT LAN every year. In fact I just bought some new servers to go in the rack to run some newer games. (Check this subforum for BeakLAN Smithsburg, MD) With firmware updates the M4's do great, the issue is, we also have to run them as single drives in laptops, so RAID1 isnt an option. 90% of users will never have an issue with SSD degrading, but with the high volume of data most of the reps work with, its an easier sell on reliablity, since the laptop drive failure rate on our 6000 or so laptops is about 30%, though it is getting a bit better.

When you're talking on that kind of scale, with millions of dollars, 1% makes a difference. So yes, the Sandforce may be faster, but Crucials firmware is WAY better in terms of write leveling. I would trade that 30 megs a second for 15% more reliablity all day.

Seems legit, we have our own rack at Atlantech in silver spring-but for personal things I've got a XEN vps, 8gb ram, run a minecraft server, IRC server, teamspeak, yadda yadda. I love me some LANs...but mainly only go to console lans for halo/call of duty..I can bring a gigabit switch w/ an xbox or two..or three..and monitors..maybe orchestrate with other people who want to console on what games we'd run-I could also get other people I know from the console competitive community to maybe come out if you're down..maybe even run a competition. ...and a 500ft reel of cat5e and connectors if needed..

I have the whole house wired with gigabit, so no need for that. There's a lot of console gamers that come, and I knew you had a Minecraft server cause I googled your image name (it comes up with a minecraft IRC log)

We have 2 xbox's but you're welcome to bring whatever. My grandparents live in silver spring, I'll actually be down there next weekend. If you want to bring people, thats cool, sleeping space is going to be a bit limited, but I have 3 acres, so if they have a tent, and an air mattress, hook it up.

Last year we had around 30 people, about 20 where gaming. I have a few TV's setup for game systems. We play pretty much anything.

As far as servers, I have a Dell 22u rack, 2850, two 2950's and I'm upgrading storage space to around 10 TB before the LAN. Right now I'm running out of room with 3tb.

I'm in for console gaming.... anything really.... lol ... I'm not picky... Used to be a CS Source guy then GO but I rarely do that.....

I don't understand the need for X79 if you're only using a quad-core and not overclocking. Unless I missed something?

wtf is lolcats?

I'd def get a fat hooker if i had to resort to that kinda thing. I feel like they'd be grateful and work harder. Also its more bang for my buck, more real estate for my dollar if you catch my drift. its like the Costco of streetwalkers.

I was hoping for 150 :(.

I was hoping she would let me put it in her butt

One fact alone for running X79 is so that it won't be left behind when the next gen processors come out, eg: ivy bridge-e which was mentioned earlier. So yes, you missed something.

But you mentioned you wanted an Extreme series. Yet you aren't overclocking? So you're looking forward to dropping $1000+ on an Ivy Bridge-E CPU to pair with a single 7950 when you could get a Haswell 4770K and a high-end socket 1150 motherboard for a combined ~$550-$600? And spend $300 on a second GPU and get much better performance and pocket the last $100.

That's the part I missed.

If you DO plan on overclocking the IVB-E chip then it makes a little more sense that you went with the cheapest SB-E chip to save money now. But then I'm thrown off by the single 7950, as an Extreme edition chip is a little bit overkill compared to a single 7950. Unless you're doing video encoding and only need the CPU cores? Or plan on buying a second and third GPU later?

I kinda just got lost figuring out what you planned on this being. It's a nice build, don't get me wrong. I love the look of the RV-01 case and I don't doubt you know what you're doing. I just can't figure out why you chose the parts you chose.

I don't plan on overclocking the 3820, is what I said..I will certainly be overclocking the ivy-e.

I rarely game on my PC, I game on console competitively and livestream it(so yes, encoding). I will probably pick up a second 7950 when they drop in price just because I can, after I've upgraded everything else in the machine. I wouldn't bother with a 3rd gpu.

I also built this machine months ago, and just recently upgraded the GPU..at the time LGA 2011 was the smartest idea, if I were to build a machine now I would wait until June when the haswells are released..

Got it. Makes much more sense now. Can't wait to see what it looks like when it's completed. :good:
