Go with a LS powerplant man. A little 5.3 with a T56 6 speed behind it would be SO BRUTAL in a truck that size. You can run a Ford 8.8 rear end out of an explorer, which are dirt cheap, and throw a 4.11 gear in it, for a super badass setup. It'll hit your wallet more when building it, but you'll save more in the long run if the truck turns into a daily driver.

4.11s are GM ratios, 4.10 would be the Ford equivalent ;)

Edit-I completely agree on the engine choice too. Hell even a mid 80s TPI setup from a Camaro or Corvette( preferably the Vette) would be awesome in that little truck. They are VERY easy to V-8 swap the S-10s. Dad and myself threw an EFI 5.0 from a Mustang in his Ranger with a 5 speed, and it hauled some ass.

Im not the one you want to try to troll. Just a fyi for you.

Damn that's right lol. 3.55 ford/3.54 Dodge. If he really wanted to cheap it up with performance still in mind, a Vortec 350 from a 96-99 C/K and a LT1 T56 would still get around great. The most killer setup, imo, is if he was to do a 4.3 with twin GT35R's with .63 A/R's, and then a T56 with 4.11's.

Truck wont be daily driver status, just pure play. Im thinking of building a 383 nd puttin my bird house breather on it. But rear axel will be a 8.8 with disks and posi that was decided before i even got the truck lol. Id go ls but start up cost is just wayy out of budget right now. And a t56 well anyone building a modern ls powered car knows how much those cost and to build them to take the power i want to make is a easy 3 k. Dream build would be a 4.8 or 5.3 with twin turbos and a t56 but for now budget minded 383 and 5 speed will do.

But if i was concered about mpg on this truck i have a 97 camaro 3.8 serries 2 on a engine stand with all the wireing and a 4l60e( droped it strait out said camaro). The 3.8 is voted one of gms best motors in terms of relabilty and mpg and respond amzeing to boost. Theirs guys with them in heavy ass 4 gen camaros pushin the 8 second mark with the little v6. So potintal is there just pocket depth isnt

vortec 350 is on the table as a option. Due to ease of swap i could go get a harness from any 1st gen s10 with a 4.3 and extend all the sensors and voila vortec 350 ready

You'll spend as much on building a 700r4 or Turbo 400 over and over as you will buying a T56 and building it right the first time. Hell, even a 4L80E would be a decent choice. I have a friend, that actually just joined this forum, that has an 82 LWB C10 Silverado with a 400+ hp/tq cammed 350 and a Turbo 400 with a Stage 2 build and shift kit, and a 3200 stall along with 4.11 gears, that is slipping like hell after two months of daily driving. Bad enough that he said to hell with it, parked it, and bought a 95 TBI truck as a new DD. And to the tune of about 8 mpg in the 82.

A totaled LS1 Camaro or TA can be had for like $3k. Pull the tranny out, and the motor, PCM, and the front drive accessories, along with the interior. Sell the LS1 and front drive accessories for $2k or more, because everyone and their dog think that building . Buy a T56 rebuild kit for $700, and a Diamond Stage 2 basic clutch kit for $400. In the end, before labor, you are only out like $500-600 bucks, and you'll have a sweet SS or WS6 leather interior for your S10. You could still go with a 383 stroker or whatever you want. A Stage 2 T56 kit is good for 6-700 hp at the crank. A 6 speed is just a hell of a lot more fun to drive than a stalled auto.

Or still, you could do that 3.8 swap. Pull an Eaton M90 off a GTP in a junkyard. And build the 60e or whatever came out of the Camaro. The 3.8 swap would be a hell of cool thing in an S10 with a S/C or a turbo.
