The custom design of this enclosure fits my trunk much better than the last box I made.

And the all important cooler test :nutkick: makes me happiest most of all

I still need to figure out how I want to finish the enclosure. I am thinking about doing bed liner to add some weight to the box the NVX VCW is pretty light but still powerful enough to make the box want to jump so I plan to make a new floor out of 1/4" birch ply and bolt it down. As far as sound goes I am happy with this setup it hits lows with authority and does well on the higher notes. I think the sub up port back in my car also seems to be louder outside the vehicle for some reason. I will right a more in-depth review once the sub has a chance to loosen up. :tyou:

How do you like it compared to your T1?

I dont think it would be fair to compare a 15 in a enclosure that is too small for it to a 12, it leaves far too much room for stipulation. Aaaand I just put it in yesterday and only listened to a few songs on a fresh woofer so I think its too early to cast accurate judgement... Ill put it through its paces and let you know how I like it.

Before you read anymore I want to make a few things clear. For comparison I am using a Rockford Fosgate T1D415 and an Alpine Type-R 12. The T1 15 is not in its optimum enclosure so my testing is subjective. I have also owned a Type-R 12 which the NVX is better in every way but I never built a custom enclosures specifically for the Type-R so obviously the NVX has the advantage. Every install is different and there is always room for improvement in several aspects, bracing, cu/ft, port area, sub/port orientation etc... Changing any of these could improve or change the output of any sub-woofer in any vehicle.

If you have been following my build log which is more like a testing bay you know I have tested a lot of different setups from a single 10, dual 10's, dual 12's, single 15, single 12, sealed boxes, ported boxes tuned high, tuned low, rear fire, side fire, sub up port drivers side, sub up port back, custom boxes, pre-fab etc... Over the years I tried it all because I wanted to learn. I don't have a Term lab so I just base it off my judgement and experience. I am no expert and don't claim to be. There are many others out there with much bigger, louder and better systems. I just love this hobby and try to help others as they have helped me along the way. Shout out to the SMD and HCA ohana for always answering my newb questions and showing me the way. And of course to Sonic Electronix and NVX for hooking me up for without them this wouldn't be possible.

OK so that being said initial impression of this sub is that it is definitely geared more toward the low end.

To my pleasant surprise this thing is just as loud if not louder than my T1 15 in the 30-40Hz region. Playing boosted and slowed stuff the NVX just excels. I am not saying that it wont do the 50's and higher but 30-40Hz is where it excels. Sounds great on music and handles dynamic bass lines well and has good sound quality. The balance seems to be better with the NVX than the T1 which seemed to over power the rest of my system at times. The T1 is louder across the bandwidth on real music and will smash the NVX when is comes to kick drums but this is expected IMO because the increase in cone area and the inherit efficiency that comes with a PSP port compared to a slot port. Short term power handling is fine on 1k and I am yet to smell coil. It probably could easily take more than rated. I will do another write up on long term power handling and durability once I get to push it longer at max for a few months. Thanks again!

edit - I also forgot to add that the amp for testing was a Rockford Fosgate P1000X1D @ 2 ohms yielding 1K rated power at that impedance.

As promised I took the Mazda over to one of the local shops here and gave Rob the owner a demo of the NVX VCW 12 and his comment to me was, "that sounds pretty good for a $200 sub" we chatted for a little bit and said that he had heard of NVX before and they are good subs. He also mentioned to me that the sound off thing isn't really popular anymore because of the downturn and people having less disposable income. I was going to buy a terminal cup and he suggested I do bolt through terminals instead and didn't want to take my money. He is a good guy and I always try to support his business when I can. I also wanted to give his shop a shout out.
