p4tr1ckk Posted April 7, 2013 Author Report Posted April 7, 2013 No sub should smoke. How did you set your gains? I think I pushed it too much, my amp was giving about 700W RMS the sub is rated a 350W RMS/1400W peak, but my level is at halfway, I was bumping all day with it, but with normal songs, I just tried a hard song with alot of lows and it started smoking. But what method did you use to set your gain? What I'm asking is: How did you determine that setting your gain at half was the correct setting for you? And what are your box specs? I used a simple hit song, I had the volume up to 50% at 0 bass on the deck, then I cranked the level on my amp. These are the specs RP212R Dual 12″ ported 31.5″ 17.25″ 15″ 3cf 34hz
SnowDrifter Posted April 7, 2013 Report Posted April 7, 2013 Ok. Where are you located? I don't mean to sound like a dick, but your gain setting is wrong and your box sucks. Both of which can and will lead to blowing subs The issue with the box you have and most other "prefabs" is that they stifle the subs. They are too small, tuned too high, and don't have enough port area. So they are also relatively quiet and don't sound good at all when compared to a custom designed one. Plenty of folks (including myself) will be happy to whip you up something so all you need to do is go to home depot, cut the wood, and put it together ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444

I know I have alot to learn in the car audio, I really think its possible for me to get better with the help of you guys. If you still willing to whip me im located in montreal ahahhaha. Can you give me a good method for setting the gain ?

Keeping it a secret would only waste your time and ours since we'd be debugging but not fixing the issue itself lol. I checked around and it looks like the nearest person to you with a DD-1 is in NY. I'm not sure if you want to drive that far lol. PM me and I'll walk you through how to set your gain http://batchgeo.com/map/93b3e7dfd7ea8496a6f1640587e3e4cf For a box: What are your maximum dimensions? lengthXwidthXdepth? ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444

Thanks SnowDrifter, I will be making my own box, I have been reading some tutorials on how to build a box and tune it, the only thing is that the E46 trunk is not very big and I need something that I can remove easily. Also, I just bought a Alpine Type-R I had a very good deal for it and its brand new, paid really cheap.
SnowDrifter Posted April 9, 2013 Report Posted April 9, 2013 Nice!Post up the dimensions you have to work with and we'll see what we can do.In all honest: 1 good 12 in a proper ported box will outperform 2 crappy ones in a prefab. So if ease of removability is your goal, perhaps a single 12 might be the way to go ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444

I will post the dimensions soon. EDIT: Trunk opening is 40" X 17". Trunk width (inside) 30" Trunk depth is 37". Trunk height is 17".
SnowDrifter Posted April 10, 2013 Report Posted April 10, 2013 As a very quick "thrown together" box... Would 15h 28w 17d be too big for you? ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
