Yes, this is exactly the thing to do to increase power handling on your mids. You still have to be smart about how you tune your system, and it won't let you run 500W to a set of 100W RMS speakers. Another very important factor is the slope of your crossover. If it's a 6 dB slope than 160 Hz might not be high enough. 24 dB/octave slopes are a safe, common slope that will do a good job of cutting the low frequencies quickly.
