sealed enclosure question.

Recommended Posts

I have two mtx tens in a sealed enclosure I just built. they are 400 watt rms.4 ohm a piece and I'm running at two ohms and a 800w rms @ 2 ohm amplifier.

no iver heard you can slightly overpower subs in sealed enclosures to gwt more out of them. is this true or false if true by how much? I'm trying to decide whether to buy a separate amp for my high and mids or by a new mono block to power my sub and use this amp for my mids and highs. and I think this will be my deciding factor. thanks in advance.

Is the amp you are currently running a two channel or a mono block?

SD, thank for the input. I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

bradprobert its a four channel set to two channel and bridged. its a cheapy dual brand. I plan to get all my speakers then do across the board amp upgrades with either RF OR Alpine units. I got to upgrade wiring too... before I do the upgeade though and run full 0 to the back I have I think its 4 gauge ran right now. but I have 0awg going for my big three then to the back. I'm kinda building as the pay checks allow ya dig? :D

Yes, you can overpower subs in a sealed enclosure or a ported enclosure for that matter. You just need to make sure the signal feeding them is clean and you are not having major voltage drop. Also you need to be more careful when overpowering subs in a sealed enclosure because you will not be able to smell the coil burning.

It would probably be louder firing to the rear unless you are planning on sealing them off. That dual Amp can do 800 rms at 2 ohm?

If I can give a little 10" 4 ohm MTX terminator sub 500rms clean I am sure those 7000's will take more too. You also could get more output going to a ported enclosure.

yeah its the xpe 4700 I believe for the amp its a four channel bridgeable and its rated at that exactly. whether I'm getting that or not I'm not 100% sure but that's what she's rated to. for real? to the rear? hmm... might have to try that. she sounds pretty mighty right now as it is. louder would be awesome though for sure...

as for the ported enclosure I thought about that. but I went with sealed due to SQ I listen to a wide range of music and figured it would do best with punk and rock and still drop low for some e40 and trick daddy :D my next closure will be ported though. I have plans already its just a matter of time :D

as far as a clean signal.... um that may be a lil while off I still have the factory head unit and I'm running through a line converter. so no guarantees there :D I'm upgeading that soon also :D kenwood baby!

You are giving those subs 300 rms maybe, no where near rated or 800 watts

Right from the manual-

Power Output (14.4VDC, 20Hz ~ 20kHz):

50 Watts RMS x 4 channels @ 4 ohms and 1% THD+N

75 Watts RMS x 4 channels @ 2 ohms and 1% THD+N

150 Watts RMS x 2 channel @ 4 ohms (bridged) and 1% THD+N

holy crap... I feel sorta jipped now. but not so bad.. now I know that that once I upgrade its gonna be even louder. :D I know that this particular amp is the top of the dual xpe line. 4 channel with a 2 channel switch that supposedly puts out 800w with the two channels bridged. like I said supposedly. it was 80 bucks plus tax brand new lol so I'm not gonna cry too much about it... ill just chuck it and by another better quality. when I started out I had this box that I bought for ten bucks at a yard sale... and wanted something to power it. here's a pic of my original box....

so I was like dude less than a hundred bucks for some bump? hell yeah... lol then I acquired these subs and it seemed to be perfect so that's the story :D but ywah a new amp is definitely in order lmno
