I am running 2 Kicker ZX2500.1's and they are both set at 2720 watts @ 30hz no distortion there. (we tested it on a shops system) We also tested my head unit for distortion, It starts to distort at 20/35 with the EQ at mid. It's just a junk ol' $80 head unit. The EQ should be flat when using the DD-1. Granted I've only purchased excelon models, usually in the middle of the series eith 5,6,7 of model numbers, so not the highest ones either. Although I have friends who have had no issues with non excelon models either. You'll be fine with any good Kenwood, Pioneer or Alpine as long as you find one that has the features your looking for. It's really just a personal choice on which you prefer.
